I was surprised to find an early Red Skull image from Martin Nodell. I had always associated him with DC Comics and Green Lantern. I guess even in the Golden Age, creators would switch back and forth between companies. Too bad this cover was almost completed before I realized he was the artist, I would have switched out Wildcat for Alan Scott.
I do like these two together, though. They first met in STF #2875...
Ah for the golden age. Too bad the Blond Phantom couldn't have been on a cycle as well.
ReplyDeleteMany artists weren't recognized by companies as being of any importance. Artists were a dime a dozen. Many interviews have had a recounting of their unimportance to the big companies especially. (Not much different than the early 60s?)
So why not do a "special edition" and put in Alan Scott?
ReplyDeleteDon't sweat it, Ross. Just pretend it's the Scarlet Skull! A one-shot foe of the Golden Age Daredevil.
ReplyDeleteSee Public Domain Superheroes under "Lev Gleason characters."
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can find another Nodell drawing of Red Skull later, and put Alan against him. It's still loads of fun seeing Wildcat and Black Cat cycling together here, and somehow I doubt this is the last I've seen of the pair.
ReplyDelete@Bob & Ross: Who knows? Maybe it'll turn out that Tigra is only the _adopted_ daughter of Louise "The Blonde Phantom" Grant!
ReplyDeleteInsert suggestive eyebrow wriggling here.
@Anonymous: in other words, her tendency to under-dress is hereditary?
ReplyDelete;-D
@Cary & Ross: Say, even though Tigra met Cheetah back in #1302, the latter was in her more human form. Maybe it's time to feature a rematch between the two least-dressed cat-women in comics!
ReplyDeleteThat was the Golden Age Cheetah! Nee Priscilla Rich, she wore a leopard-print leotard a la Josie and the Pussycats. It's the Barbara Ann Miner-version who goes around in her spotted birthday suit.
ReplyDelete@Carycomic: Sad, but true.
ReplyDeleteHey Ross, how about Red Skull vs Atomic Skull?
ReplyDeleteRed Skull is showing up tomorrow actually
ReplyDeleteWhoopee doopie you- um genius!
ReplyDeleteGo-go-go, Ross-tro Boy!
