I watched Star Trek II again last night. Ricardo Montalban's iconic performance as James T. Kirk's arch foe from that movie as well as the earlier series episode Space Seed still holds up today. His commitment to the role with equal parts rage, confidence, swagger and obsession along with an interesting back story made Khan one of the all-time great screen villains. He's always fun to revisit.
I agree. I am educating my 17 year old and we are watching all the Star Trek series. Ricardo Montalban really was good. We hope to move on to the Next Generation by the end of the month.

ReplyDeleteI quite agree with your assessment concerning Don Ricardo's take on that super-villainous role. The English actor who was cast for the part, in the second STAR TREK movie reboot, just didn't exude enough of that "love-to-hate-him" factor.
As to the New Year, itself? Like I said earlier this morning, the only thing I regret about the passing of the old one is the lack of a true sea lab at the base of Mt. Challenger in the South Pacific.
I think it's a testament to Ricardo's commitment to the role that at no time could I ever imagine Khan saying, "Smiles, everybody! Smiles!"

One thing this place is never short of: Khan-sistently bad puns.
ReplyDeleteRecently, a comic book titled (at least in part) "Hell's Mirror" featured the Mirror Universe's version of Khan; earlier a Mirror Universe's version of "Star Trek: Voyager" was featured.

@Horsefeathers: Of course, he was! He strongly disagreed with Ralph Waldo Emerson's belief about "foolish Khan-sistencies."
ReplyDeleteKhan is not fun to revisit after reboot of franchise. I think they are seeing it as a mistake now with all of the new pre-reboot stuff.
