I have always really enjoyed the classic Republic cliffhanger movie serials, and I con only imagine how fun they were for kids back when they originally premiered. Among my favorites are King of the Rocket Men and Captain Marvel, which both have very impressive flying sequences (certainly more convincing than those found on the 70's live action Shazam! TV series).
These two captains met in a more traditional comic book adventure in STF #494...
Love this one! I was just going through a stack of DVDs and came across a Captain Marvel serial collection and a box set of episodes from Rocky Jones and Flash Gordon.
ReplyDeleteFor a future Photo Cover maybe an early 80s Captain America/Flash Gordon team-up movie starring Reb Brown and Sam Jones!
Say, maybe you could revisit this very tale using one of the Captain marvel actors from the TV live-action Shazam! and Reb Brown from the 1979 CBS TV-Movie. Then you could call it "Panic at the Disco!"
ReplyDeleteOK, nah.
But it might be interesting to put Reb's Cap together with Cathy Lee Crosby's Wonder Woman!
PS: Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans. Please observe and respect your freedoms in a safe, responsible, and enjoyable manner!
Every Sunday at 11:00 Central I Tune in to Eerie Late Night.Com to watch a show called Don's Breakfast Serials. The chapters are divided up into 5 chapter segments. Don has shown both Captain America and Captain Marvel, both some of the best put out by Republic Pictures. Have a safe and sane 4th of July all.
ReplyDelete@Bob and Paul: right back at you! :-)
ReplyDelete@Ross: I know what you mean. I remember my hometown CBS affiliate telecasting this old Depression-era serial called "The Vanishing Shadow" as part of an R.I.F. (Reading Is Fundamental) program. Each night, Monday through Friday, for two weeks, a different chapter would be shown between 7:30 and 8PM. With elementary school kids, across the state, having gotten to read reproductions of the original screenplay earlier that day in class!
It was both enjoyable and fascinating to watch something from the Golden Age of Low-budget Special Effects (where imagination had to make up for lack of big bucks).
So, once again: have a Happy 4th, Ross!
Look! It's..it's America Maid's uncles, The American Marvel and The Captain!!
ReplyDeleteAs the fireworks are going off and the virus is getting stronger, they can only turn to their doctors and scientists to determine the right vaccine for the population.
Hope their teacher friends are ready for a new kind of future and that the kids don't wind up taking the virus to their families, friends and neighbors.
Hope you are all safe and fairly comfortable and not keeping cabin fever.
Very cool.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th to all. Having seen Steve on the big screen without a shield or cape or horse or gas gun made it seem a mystery -- WHY do it at all?
ReplyDeleteAt this point there should be a number of live pix on the 1940s Captain America, Captain Marvel, Superman, Batman, Blackhawk, Green Hornet and Shadow. That would be one heck of a League of Justice pix. just saying.
Temperature in the 90s, medical challenges, yeah let's definitely go out to celebrate in big crowds. Fortunately we do have an oasis thanks to Ross.
Bob Greenwade, there's also room to follow with the recent DCEU and MCU versions of these heroes.
ReplyDeletefollowing from Detective above you also include the movie serial versions of Spy Smasher,
ReplyDeleteCaptain Midnight, the Phantom, the Spider or even Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon...
Crazy Ivan: Assuming you're referring to the two Captains, yes, I know that Chris Evans and Zachary Levi could also have their own combo; however, that wouldn't fit the pun above.
ReplyDeleteIf you mean Chris with Gal Gadot, that has already been done. Reb with Cathy Lee, though -- especially if compatible images of them on their respective motorcycles could be found -- would be fun.
I wonder if the evil mastermind would turn out to be a would-be absolute monarch called...King Kovid XIX?
ReplyDeleteOne word @ Anon1007: BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
ReplyDelete@Anon@10:17: Maybe in the Evans/Levi remake.
ReplyDelete@Anon@12:18: Huh?
Ross could entitle that one: "Captains Outrageous."
