The Beast and Robin in: "Penny Pincher!"

This serves as a direct sequel to STF # 2134,  taking place just minutes later.  Now we have a clearer idea of what Hank McCoy was doing breaking into the Batcave.  That story always stuck in my head and I've been meaning to create a follow up for a while now.  I think he would get along with Dick Grayson, they would probably compare aerialist moves.

  1. Ha! Great cover. I clicked on the link for the first team-up. I started reading The Avengers BEFORE X-Men. Always liked Beast. Never knew he was one of the original X-Men. Perfect that he would team up with an original Teen Titan...

  2. Now this would be a real easy story to get into. Since Robin works with Beast Boy, working along side the Beast would fit right in. But Richard would be amazed at how brilliant Hank really is as they work thru the story.

  3. Great cover, Beast pre-cat phase was one of my favorite Avengers, but since it is a sequel you missed a great title:

    "In for a Penny"
"Out for a Pound" (of Arcade)

It works so well. Penny, Pound, and Robin's inclination for puns.

  4. Well, Arcade might've booby-trapped his replica penny because the opportunity to take out the Dynamic Duo was just too irresistible. But, I still think he did it on behalf of Omega Red (who desires the carbonadium it's made of)!

  5. Hmm, I would have thought that if Arcade was going to replace anything in the Batcave, it would have been the robot T-Rex Batman had on display. I wonder where Batman originally got that from? Also, Arcade probably would have found a way to animate all of the various costumes Batman made over the years, too.

  6. Well, STF:TLI is known for jumping around the timeline, but taking 2 years to pick up a story after just minutes have passed is a whole new twist! (Not necessarily an unwelcome one, of course.)

Maybe in 2022 they'll catch up to the penny, only to find that Galactus has it and has turned into an oversized version of Two-Face. (No, of course that's not going to be the case. But it would be a fun twist!)

Along another line, I've been trying to anticipate what's in store for Valentine's Day. Another installment in the WW/Cap saga would be the most obvious, with the Power Couple close behind. Starfox (who is the Greek god Eros) versus Cupid (the Green Arrow foe) would also be an interesting possibility, and might be worth pursuing for next year. Deadpool and Captain Jack Harkness? Or perhaps some sort of all-new Marvel/DC teen-love couple?

Another topic: As I was drifting off to sleep last night, I had an idea for a three-part story featuring Mogo (I think of the trilogy as "The Travails of Mogo!"). First, Mars Attacks! Then, the Dalek Invasion of Mogo! But that was all to soften him up for... Galactus!

PS: A reminder of an old suggestion. With May being Stroke Awareness Month, that would be a good time for a team-up between Nocturne (of the Exiles) and the Golden Age Sandman, the two characters in comics who have had strokes (though Wesley's was rather more severe than TJ's). Not only would it be a nice public service, but it'd also be a fun team-up independently of that.

  7. I don't really do Holiday theme covers except for Christmas and maybe 4th of July. Coming up is a 2-part tale that picks up seeds from another 2-parter that I posted a while back, not unlike today's continuation. The STF romances will continue however.

Mogo is slated to appear again soon, for the start of a 3-parter where he summons...?

I never read Exiles, so I'm not familiar with character from that run.

it was originally built as a film prop, and made its debut in a story originally published back in the 1940s or '50s.

  9. Never mind where he got it from. I want to know how he brought it to the Batcave without anyone noticing. Same goes for the giant penny.

  10. Ross - Exiles is available in TPB form, and I do recommend it (especially if you can get it from your public library). That said, Talia actually had her stroke while with the New Excalibur (2005-2007), which is also available in TPB form (and now that I think of it, I think I'll see if my library has that one).

  11. @Bob Greenwade: I like the giant George Raft-impersonator suggestion! But, I wonder if the one who hired Arcade to steal it might have been...a Third Brother!*

*Remember the Two Brothers who duked it out over the DC and Marvel multiverses in the "Access" crossovers? What if they had a sibling who represented all the indie comic universes?

  12. A highly jealous sibling, at that!

  13. A team-up suggestion for Doctor Strange: the Sorceror Supreme gets a new apprentice in "Mouse Call"...

  14. As in, Merlin the Magic Mouse from WB via Depatie-Freleng circa 1967?

No, as in Mickey Mouse as the Sorceror's Apprentice from 'Fantasia'.

  16. @Simreeve: I like that idea, except that I'd have the master side of the equation be John Constantine.

Ouch! talk about odd couples... That could work, too...
But then you'd lose the Doctor/"Mouse Call" (pun on "House Call', which is what a doctor visiitng a patient at the patient's home is called over here) joke, as well as the fact that as Dr Strange routinely is described as a 'sorceror' the 'Sorceror's Apprentice' bit makes a good fit.

  18. Unless Constantine were posing as "Dr. Occult!"

There was some intra-company crossover at DC that featured a tie-in/one-shot where the two of them referenced some prior dispute between them. This was the same story where Dr. Occult (and his "feminine side" Rose Psychic) ultimately wound up getting manipulated into someone else's death trap by Constantine! Allegedly on his daughter's behalf.

My point is, Constanine tutoring Mickey in sorcery, while impersonating Dr. Occult, would not be looked on kindly by the good doctor. Thereby providing the STF basis for that implied-yet-canonical prequel.

    Okay, yes, that could work.

The DC story that you're thinking of was part of the 'Injustice' storyline

  20. @Simreeve: yes! That was the one! Thanks. :-)
