Shazam! was a fun movie but not a huge hit at the box office, so I wonder what that will mean for the long discussed Black Adam solo film. Will DC rethink things, or hope that The Rock can come in and turn around a movie franchise, as he has done a few times before? I think they would have been better off having him in the first film, apparently it could have used his box office clout.
Maybe Khandaq and "Alpha Flight"'s Great Beasts (whose name often have the last two letters). XD
ReplyDeleteEven Dwayne Johnson's talents can't always guarantee box-office success. As Mr. Rogers might have put it:
ReplyDelete"Can you say, DOOM?"
@the first Anonymous: if you meant to say that someone (like, for example, the Living Tribunal) may have confused Khandaq the country with one of the Great Beasts of the Marvel Inuit pantheon, I'd buy that. I would even guess that the Great Beast who was guilty of it is the one nicknamed "The Corruptor!"
ReplyDeleteAs evidence, I would cite Thor's flowing cape...and its unsettling resemblance to bared claws.
The main weakness with Shazam! was inconsistency of characterization: while Asher Angel and Zachary Levi each put in a fine performance, they didn't seem to be playing the same person, and that hurt the film's believability. For this, I blame mainly the writer (the dialogue for either should be just as suitable for the other) and the director (who really should have thought of this).
ReplyDelete[SPOILER ALERT] Most of the other kids/heroes had a similar problem, though not as pronounced since the adult versions had such short screen time. [END SPOILERS]
Hopefully, for the sequel (which I understand is being done, the actors can work things out. The cast of the 1990 TV-movie adaptation of Stephen King's It nailed this one; in particular, Richard Masur and Ben Heller (Stanley) worked out a couple of mannerisms in common for continuity's sake, despite Richard having the least screen time of all the Losers Club actors.
And while the Shazam! sequel is merely "reported," The Rock has reported that Black Adam is officially green-lit, and once a director can be hired he hopes to start filming late this year or early next year.
As for today's cover, I think the story would be one spectacular superhero smackdown. I suspect that Adam would give Thor a major workout, but eventually see that he really can't win against the God of Thunder and decide to repair the situation. (There might even be a third party involved, and the pair on the cover team up to make their displeasure known.)
@Cary: I'd have to disagree. Kariooq represents physical decay (the original meaning of "corruption"). But, Somon the Artificer has mind-control powers! So, I'd place the blame on him.
ReplyDeleteThunder vs Lightning! What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI, for one, am getting tired of the Rock already. And if Fast & Furious 9 is as bad as I think its going to be, Rock's box office clout may slip before Shazam II gets made.
ReplyDeleteI have to side with Jay. Without Paul Walker as Brian, any further F&F sequels are pretty fore-Doomed to failure!
ReplyDeleteDon't know about Brian in F&F, but how about Brain (from Inspector Gadget) and Oracle on this blog?
ReplyDeleteGiven the way Shazam used Sivana as a physical match for Billy, they would have been much better off just using Black Adam. As much as I wanted to like it, the movie was terrible.
ReplyDeleteThis movie is far far far from terrible. It was light hearted and amazing and if u ever read any Shazam or captain marvel(DC) then u would know Levi nailed his role. Asher was amazing as Billy and the reason the damn movie didn't perform as well as others is because of the assinine number of comic movies released around it. Endgame, captain marvel, hellboy reboot, this horrible looking X-Men thing ( actually both if the godawful looking new mutants ever comes out) and Shazam was better than Capt marvel and hellboy and will b better than dark Phoenix (again)
DeleteI forgot to say how much I liked this cover. One of your best.
ReplyDeleteGotta permanently disagree, Unknown. Levi and Asher's characterizations were dissimilar enough that it looked like those nails had been hit with rubber hammers!
ReplyDeleteMaybe so, Anon. But, even at its worst, SHAZAM THE MOVIE was still ten times better than the premise behind the upcoming BRIGHTBURN.
