The Shroud Vs. Nightshade
Putting together a cover as intricate as this one is pretty complicated, but only the best for the visitors of this blog, that's what I say! Thanks to Bob Greenwade, a Patron of this blog for inspiring this masterpiece!
I believe it was Marvel Fun and Games that had a couple panels like this one. Black Panther, the Shroud, and Cloak fighting at night, where the panel was all black. Or Moon Knight, White Tiger, and Ice Man fighting in a snowstorm, where the panel was all white. Fun times. And fun post for today.
and Happy April Fool's Day to you as well, Ross... this is a new classic for your blog and is for sure one that will be talked about for ages to come.... i also liked how you sneaked in in the background Griffith from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.... very cool....

They did it in one of their more serious comics, slightly after that (in "Assistant Editors' Month"?), as well: In an early issue of Alpha Flight, Snowbird fought against a white-furred member of the 'Great Beasts' (one whose body Sasquatch later took over, IIRC) in a snowstorm for several pages...
It reminds me of those two covers Marvel once did for "WHAT IF..." where Black Panther fought Black Widow in a coal mine. And Iceman fought Silver Surfer in a snowstorm.
I've wondered before if I could make the amazing pieces of art that you do, but after seeing this one today, it's clear that I should leave it to you! I could never!
Next April could you join all of your Lost Issues into one Brave and Bold Two In One Super Team Family edition. The masthead would probably be so big that we'd only be able to see the tops of characters' heads underneath it.
I will remind you that one of the published Alpha Flight issues had a 6 page fight of Snowbird vs Wendigo in a snow storm, it was all white panels with just word balloons and sound effects. John Byrne got into trouble for doing it and ordered to never do it again.
Meanwhile, just outside".....a weird sound could be heard. It was Lamont Cranston laughing at the irony of the blackout from the defective E.M.P. bomb.
Anon, EMP bomb is (from wiki), An electromagnetic pulse (EMP), also sometimes called a transient electromagnetic disturbance, is a short burst of electromagnetic energy. Such a pulse's origination may be a natural occurrence or man-made and can occur as a radiated, electric, or magnetic field or a conducted electric current, depending on the source.
EMP interference is generally disruptive or damaging to electronic equipment, and at higher energy levels a powerful EMP event such as a lightning strike can damage physical objects such as buildings and aircraft structures. The management of EMP effects is an important branch of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineering.
Weapons have been developed to deliver the damaging effects of high-energy EMP.
And do I see special guest-stars Obsidian and Shadow Lass too? Very clever cover!
ReplyDeleteIs that an unattributed Deadman taking over Invisible Girl?
ReplyDeleteNice April Fools cover!

ReplyDeleteIt was What If # 34

I always wondered what it would be like to see Invisible Girl and Invisible Kid team!
ReplyDeleteOut of sight!
DeleteBefore Marvel Fun and Games or Marvel Assistant Editor's Month, there was Asterix and the Great Crossing (in the original French, 1975 edition, "La Grande Traversée).
ReplyDeleteEvery frame on the first page was blank except for a word balloon, as the scene was set in heavy fog.
I remember What If? had a similar gag with and all-white panel and an all-black panel in the all-humor issue.
ReplyDeleteGood on, Ross (lol)!
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of those two covers Marvel once did for "WHAT IF..." where Black Panther fought Black Widow in a coal mine. And Iceman fought Silver Surfer in a snowstorm.
And just for the record, my original idea was this issue's backup story.
ReplyDeleteMaybe next time Sue and Jacques meet, they can bring some friends to fight the Predator in an Arctic snowstorm.

ReplyDeleteJohn Byrne did much the same in an issue of Alpha Flight, where Snowbird battled one of the ancient beasts in a blizzard. Just brilliant.
ReplyDeleteAnd Bob Greenwade... are you sure you didn't mean Lyle and not Jacques? :) :) :)
Great. Hey, I came up with one. Dr. Doom (or whoever)Goes up against Knight Watchman or maybe Ultiman. The title: "Knocking off the Knock Off".
ReplyDeletePersonally , I can't see it
ReplyDeleteAwesome cover! It's amazing how it looks like they were all drawn by the same artist.
ReplyDeleteI think Shadow thief invited himself to this midnight social gettogether as well.
ReplyDelete(it got to be a cast of hundreds!)
Thank you, Unknown. :-)
ReplyDeleteCharles McNider is in there too, I think.
ReplyDelete@ELS: Yes, I'm quite sure.
ReplyDeleteSomething has gone wrong on my computer. I can't see the artists in the labels.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I never knew Jim Aparo had drawn Nightshade.

ReplyDelete@Anonymous421: So is Anthony "The Black Bat" Quinn.
ReplyDeleteDidn't see that one coming!

ReplyDeleteLOL :-D

No idea what you mean by EMP bomb, but it did make me think of Lamont Cranston (the Shadow) and Anton Lamont (the Fadeaway Man)

And here I thought weaponized EMP had been (accidentally) invented by Dr. Benton Quest.*
