I have recently begun re-reading the complete run of Calvin & Hobbes, and just finished the first collection. It amazes me how strongly the strip started off - Bill Watterson had his character designs down from the outset, the cast of characters changed very little in appearance over the years. Plus, Calvin's vivid imagination and perception of his stuffed tiger are firmly established within the first few strips. No wonder it was such an instant hit with readers.
Hulk smash for terrible title pun! :D Love it!
ReplyDeleteWould love to see Spaceman Spiff team up with Rocket Raccoon and Groot!
Spaceman Spiff with Rocket Raccoon would be cool, but how about Spiff and Duck Dodgers?
ReplyDeleteWhen Watterson first tried to sell his strip for syndication, they wanted him to make it about Robotman so they could sell toys. He turned them down. Jim Meddick took the deal instead, and eventually got to get rid of the character and rename his comic strip Monty.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Sakaar the name of that alien GL who looked like a Ripley xenomorph?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - That was Salaak.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mike. :-)
ReplyDeleteCalvin vs. the Hulk! It had to happen!!!
ReplyDeleteThis world ain't big enough for the both of 'em.
M.P.
Now, if only we could see Spaceman Spiff take on Darth Vader...or the Silver Age GL. Or maybe even both!
ReplyDeleteCalvin meets 'Mazing Man?
