I understand that the movies would want to change up Scarlet Witch's outfit, but I still think they could have been a little more comics-accurate with the designs she has been given. First, she needs brighter colors - she's not called the Deep Maroon Witch, after all. Plus, she really does need a tiara/headband of some sort, that can't be that difficult so pull off in live action. Capes are tough to justify, but maybe she would wear one to honor the memory of The Vision?
I fully agree with you, Ross, about Wanda's outfit. Most of her Earth-616 outfits would be impractical in the MCU (or most any other live-action setting), but some sort of homage to her comic-book look would be in order. Even a red headband (the kind that keeps one's hair out of one's face) and a low-cut red T-shirt would help. And, yes, a brighter shade of red would help; what the heck is it with designers on these shows and their nigh-obsession with dark shades? (Even the White Canary's outfit isn't really white!)
ReplyDeleteOn related note, when I saw who was on this cover I immediately had the thought: Has Raven ever teamed up with Cloak? Has the Scarlet Witch met Zatanna? The answer to both is yes, of course, though re-meets would be quite welcome -- especially if you can showcase the similarities between Raven's outfit and Cloak's.
Interesting pairing, Ross. Is this some sort of sequel to STF #2360?
ReplyDeleteThey are slowly getting better -- Flash's new costume is a much brighter (and pretty close to the correct) shade of red and they are trying out gold boots for XS's costume. But the MCU doesn't have "super-heroes", it has operatives with powers. Bright and shiny things are reserved for dress uniforms, not battle suits / armors.
ReplyDeleteI'd say a prequel if anything. Cary.
ReplyDeleteJay: The Flash Family and Super-Cousins are notable exceptions. In fact, I rather like Kid Flash's and Jesse Quick's shade of yellow. The Hawk-Couple's outfits weren't terribly bad, either. And of course it would make sense for Team Arrow to favor darker shades. Other heroes -- most notably Vixen and White Canary -- can be brighter, though.
ReplyDeleteI'm reminded of comments made on the DVD special features about Doctor Fate's appearance on Smallville. At first the director didn't think that the solid blue and yellow would look anything but cheesy, but then he saw Brent Stait actually wearing it on the set and under the lighting being used and decided that it looked appropriately creepy. (Brent's performance was absolutely brilliant too, I might add.)
Whoever designed that costume for Raven had no conception of the history of the character. Is this when they de-aged her to a sulky goth teenager?
ReplyDeleteIn general movie director / costume creators have attitude "I can do it better" rather than "What can I do to make the characters look like they do in the comics since we are adapting or inspired by them."
ReplyDeleteIf you cannot do costumes right (i.e. atrocious Flash costume on JL which looked like he got it out of tinker toy box) then don't do it.
I agree with you, Glenn. It's what I like to call "George Lucas Syndrome." A.k.a. fixing what ain't broken!
