Green Lantern Vs. Green Goblin in: "Double Jeopardy!"

I Wonder why Doctor Octupus was chosen to be Spider-Man's villain in the Superman Vs. Spider-Man, when The Green Goblin would have been a much better fit.  As much as I loke Doc Ock, GG has always been considered Spidey's greatest arch enemy, plus he is a wealthy and powerful businessman in addition to being a villain, making him more of a natural fit to join forces with Lex Luthor as well.  Perhaps the death of Gwen Stacy was still too fresh as the time the tabloid-sized crossover was released, and Marvel just didn't want to go there?

Green Goblin battled the Hal Jordan Green Lantern back in STF #660...

  1. Kingpin can be compared to Lex Luthor, too. In fact, an Amalgam comic could be imagined hybridizing those two villains.

  2. Dave sez,
Maybe Lex had a clause in his contract about working with Green crazies after all those failed partnerships with The Joker...?

  3. Or it could be that, as on Earth-616, the Green Goblin was still in a regenerative coma. One deep enough to fool even doctors of the caliber of Donald Blake! Because, let's not forget that--in April 1976--the First Crisis was still a decade in the future. So, there was not yet any "need" to incessantly wipe the slate clean, just to boost sales figures.

  4. It is nice to see the classic Green Lantern art in the blog.

  5. I recall seeing the two GLs (this one and Hal Jordan) working together in JLA/JSA crossovers. I wish that DC would have considered a story featuring them, be it a one shot or a mini series.

  6. @Ross - Great cover, and in answer to your goblin question, I'll let Dr. McCoy answer that .... He's dead Jim! @Mickey - They teamed up a few times in GL's solo book. One of the very first comics from the sixties I bought had those two. They teamed up right after the flashes. What a time for comics!

  7. ...to Isaac above, that would be Green Lantern #40 from October 1965 with Earth 2 guest star Alan (Green Lantern) Scott...
...i am a JSA fanatic from way way back...

  8. @Isaac and @ jackel: Thanks for letting me know that. Most of the issues from the 60s that I have are Marvel, especially the Avengers. I started collecting initially in the mid 170s for about 2 years. Then I got deeply into it in the 80s throughout high school and college. Unfortunately, graduate school took up my reading time. I have been out of the loop for about 20 years for the most part. I was able to read the DC/Marvel crossovers right at 20 years ago and the subsequent Avengers/JLA, which I thought was awesome.

  9. Does the Goblin know enough to bring an all-wooden arsenal?

    If not--Holy Mismatch!

  10. Immediately after killing Gwen Stacy, the Green Goblin died, too. And when that story appeared in 1973, both deaths were "for real" and "forever." Plus, even if Gobby had been "alive" when Supes met Spidey, Norman Osborn probably would have had too much baggage in his backstory.

  11. The first Green Lantern (Jordan) / Green Lantern (Scott) cover ended up in a oversize calendar / poster book. I have the covers separated and hanging on my wall.
