Johnny Thunder Dreams of Jeannie!
I liked watching reruns of I Dream of Jeannue! when I was a kid. The comedy was corny in a Gilligan's Island kind of way but the main character had super powers, something that always interested me. Plus Barbara Eden was easy on the eyes!
I'm old enough to have watched I Dream of Jeannie during the original broadcasts. I enjoyed the "fish out of water" aspect of the show, with Jeannie misunderstanding much of (then) modern American culture, which of course led to hijinks that her magic only intensified. Of course she got used to it over time, so the comedy moved on to others' reactions to her, with similarly skewed results.
As to Johnny, it's nice to see him on his second solo outing on this blog in a year, especially considering his only other one was way back in 2014. He's my favorite Golden Age JSAer, being that rare superhero who does not wear a fancy costume or use a code-name.
It's a nice combo here, with the names Johnny and Jeannie. I'd like to see them together again if possible.
In costume forms, Sailor Moon makes a better bishoujo (chick), (also is Japanese), but Jeannie can fit into a tiny (ball), like pokemon (also FO's Fairy Idol's Norm the genie).
Mine were Bewitched, then My Favorite Martian, whose stars went on to comics related fame, Ray Walston as Poop-Deck Pappy to Robin Williams' Popeye, and Bill Bixby the iconic Incredible Hulk.
The old episodes are fun to watch. I like to imagine the Air Force was doing covert LSD experiments on its pilots a la the CIA of the same era. Jeannie my eye! Those guys were tripping balls!
"There were times I felt like crawling into the TV set, slapping Major Nelson upside the head, and yelling: 'What's the matter with you?!' I mean, here's this beautiful girl, wearing a Frederick's of Baghdad outfit, willing to do anything for him. And he don't want her to do it???
Arsenio Hall: it appears you read the same book review as me for I remembered the reference: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/books/review/book-review-memoirs-by-dick-van-dyke-and-barbara-eden.html
Johnny was not always a Gentleman in his stories, so one wonders if the Thunderbolt would be able to fill this wish ! as they used to say in the Cream Cake adverts Naughty but Nice… i think it’s a case where the Thunderbolt might have used an illusion…
How about Jeannie and Pokemon.
ReplyDeleteOr
ReplyDeletejeannie and Sailor Moon (perhaps competing to be bishoujo pokemon).
Barbara Eden is STILL easy on the eyes.

My favorite episode? Part Three of "Genie, Genie, Who's Got The Genie?" (featuring Barabara Eden as her evil brunette twin).

ReplyDeleteNitpicking: Barbera Eden's navel is supposed to be covered up by her costume. It was a network/FCC thing that she couldn't show her navel.
ReplyDeleteJohnny Thunder did not need a code name due to his name. If it had been something else especially with a Thunderbolt he would have had one.
ReplyDeletebewitched was my show.....lol

DeleteAlmost never watched Jennie
Sequel suggestion time: Zzzax vs. Johnny's Thunderbolt.

How about Djinn-Djinn meets pokemon.
ReplyDeleteOr Goober the Ghost Chaser?

@GH: Nope! I saw the actual episode of Arsenio's original talk show where he first said that (during his opening monologue).
ReplyDeleteP.S. @ Ross---does this mean Dr. Kent Nelson and Major Anthony Nelson are related?
