One thing that amazed me about Bill Watterson was his ability to draw landscapes and scenery as well as the shenanigans of a boy and his stuffed tiger. His mastery of pacing, body language and facial expressions would have been enough to make Calvin & Hobbes a great strip, and the fact that they operated in such lush environments really helped to put it over the top into classic territory. Watterson could have just as easily illustrated a straight up adventure comic.
True that...
ReplyDeleteProbably this isn't a team-up that I'd ever have envisaged myself... but it works, oh my, it does!
ReplyDelete^_^
Wow. Pure genius.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful image. I'd love a hi-res version to hang on my wall. Without the comic dress would be even better...
ReplyDeletedidn't a somewhat similar monster(?) called the Maxx have in his cartoon Calvin or a similarly drawn character?
ReplyDeleteAmazing!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm! I would have thought a team up between these two and Stanley & His Monster would've been more fitting.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely great and it would work because they wound never offend swampy!
ReplyDeleteEven if we have no more Calvin & Hobbes at least we have your covers with them occasionally.
Thanks, guys - glad you got a kick out of this one!
ReplyDeleteWhoa! They're lucky it's not Man-Thing! I would have thought Hobbes still might notice something was off. Well done Ross.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of Man-Thing actually with them - Calvin & Hobbes are fearless which means they will not burn at Man-Thing's touch. Calvin & Hobbes actually would make good Green Lanterns or just frustrate Sinestro.
ReplyDeleteCan I buy a print of this?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately it's not legal for me to sell images of my covers since they use existing art and licenced characters
ReplyDeleteIf their treading on his forehead didn't wake him up, C & H are even more boring than I thought!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous Whoa! Overly harsh much?
ReplyDeleteAnd dinosaurs!! The man could draw dinosaurs too!!
ReplyDeleteHey! Shag just gave me an idea for a suggestion.
ReplyDelete"Devil Dinosaur and Moonboy meet Calvin and Hobbes."
Great idea!! More dinosaurs the better! :)
DeleteP.S.---Please, note that I said "...and Moonboy." The latter was most definitely NOT on the cover of STF #385.
ReplyDeleteI second Shag's motion.

I think you may be thinking of The Pitt and his friend Timmy
