One of the great things about Roy Thomas'
All-Star Squadron was that he not only included the Justice Society characters, but also many other Golden Age heroes that I had only seen in a few back-up reprint stories. I always wanted to see more of Johnny Quick and the original Robotman, and finally they were appearing in new adventures.
Iron Man and the Cliff Steele Robotman appeared on this blog together
not long ago in a
two-part tale...
I liked that he took a core of heroes that were not JSA-ers or JLA-ers and made them a unique and original team. Firebrand, Johnny Quick, Liberty Belle, Tarantula, Amazing Man! It was fresh and diverse! It was he kind of book that DC can't seem to do today - no matter how hard they try. The whole Earth-2/Society thing just doesn't work for me. Looks like what they are trying to there is what used to be called the Silver Age Justice League...
ReplyDeleteALL-STAR SQUADRON was one of the greatest comics ever published. Solid writing and plenty of action. Roy Thomas did an amazing job of balancing so many characters.
ReplyDeleteHow about a G.I. ROBOT and MACHINE MAN team-up?
I loved All-Star Squadron as well. It gave a fresh look at old characters who, as you said, had appeared only in back-up reprints, and gave them new adventures. It also gave us some new heroes such as Amazing-Man and the female Firebrand.
ReplyDeleteSay, now that you've brought out the original Robotman, how about teaming him with the original Human Torch? There could be some interesting dynamics there between android and cyborg.
Another great cover, but two things...
ReplyDelete1) Robotman was originally scientist BOB Crane, and later adopted the human identity Paul DENNIS.
2) "Rot Thomas...?"
Not on Earth-STF
ReplyDeleteExcellent!!!!!
ReplyDelete:-D
Sweet team-up! I can definitely see this one, especially in a scenario where Stark bought the "rights" to Crane's body and re-awakens very confused, and very very pissed. Probably thinking it's WW2 era America again and the Nazis put in his current position.
ReplyDeleteI'll also second the team-up idea that Wolfhammer suggested about GI Robot and Machine Man. Damn that'd be perfect. Do it!!!!!
Great idea, great cover.
ReplyDeleteI love what Roy Thomas was doing with Earth 2 just before the Crisis, in both ALL-STAR SQUADRON and INFINITY INC.
Wonderful re-creation, Ross. How about one featuring the Hulk chasing the Atom for a Hostess Chocolate Cupcake?*
ReplyDelete* I just saw the Super Bowl commercial for Coke. And I was reminded of all those Hostess ads back in the Seventies.
Hi! Love your work!
ReplyDeleteCould you work up any of the following:
--Batman & Spider-Woman (David Finch art)?
--Emma Frost & Batman?
--Donna Troy & The Thing?
--Doc Samson "Vs." Crazy Jane in therapy?
--The New Mutants vs. The New Teen Titans?
There are Batman/Spider-Woman and TT/New Mutants covers on here already at least...
ReplyDeleteBut I've never seen Doc Samson & Crazy Jane! ;-)
DeleteYour mention of Jonny Quick made me think of Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt. A team between he and Shazzan and Jeannie (Barbara Eden) and any other genies you can think of would be magical.
ReplyDeleteI always felt the All-Star Squadron comic started going downhill when the Justice Society "returned" and began appearing more frequently. I was not interested at all in them. I wanted stories focused on the "second bannanas!"

I wanted -- and still want -- to read stories about both of those teams, whether together or (for preference) in two separate series...
