As much of a bomb
Waterworld turned out to be, I remember a few moments that stood out to me. Watching Kevin Costner speed-swim or come leaping out of the water made me think that with a few years of technical advancements, an Aquaman or Sub-Mariner film could be pulled off. Well, decades have passed and nobody has tried it yet. DC's upcoming
Aquaman film will be the first to attempt an undersea superhero and if they can pull it off, it will be unlike any action picture before it.
It was always funny watching The Man From Atlantis. I think Aquaman has been an under-rated opportunity. I seem to remember that Aquaman and The Martian Manhunter were the ones that helped beat the Crime Syndicate.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, "Waterworld" - like "John Carter" - does not deserve its reputation as a bomb; it is in fact one of my favorite movies. And secondly, while the upcoming "Aquaman" film may be the first cinematic take on the hero, there was an excellent "Aquaman" TV pilot produced by the team responsible for "Smallville" that should have become a series.
ReplyDelete@John Small: You're absolutely right. And the Aquaman pilot can be found on YouTube, for a $1.99 charge.
ReplyDeleteThe question is: will Marvel Films ever do a Submariner flick? I can't exactly picture Patrick Duffy with Mr. Spock ears.
ReplyDeletePatrick Duffy is too old now although he might be close to Namor's real age.
ReplyDeleteThe Aquaman underwater segment of Justice League was great.
@John Small: you're half-right. JOHN CARTER was ten times _better_ than WATERWORLD.
