The Haunted Tank and Tank Girl

I picked up a couple of Haunted Tank Showcase volumes just for the Joe Kubert art, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the stories.  I was never a huge war comic reader as a kid, so all of the stories were new to me.  The tales are action packed and filled with last minute escapes and sage advice from the ghost that guards the tank - great stuff!

  1. I'm kind of surprised that no self-appointed Defender of Social Justice has demanded that the Haunted Tank comics be banned/pulped/dumped down the Memory Hole because the heroic ghost is a (gasp!) CONFEDERATE general!

  2. Well, apparently (Although I haven't seen it myself) DC did create a follow-up series set in modern times in which the General's ghost had to work with a BLACK tank commander...

Does anybody else here remember the 'Hawk and Dove' annual, from the late 1980s or maybe 1990, in which the Tank turned up to help H&D -- and the rest of an improvised team that was basically a reconstituted version of the old 'Titans West' -- on an expedition into one of the Hell dimensions?

  4. I don't think they could ever do this team-up as a real-world comic. I mean; what would be the gimmick? Time travel for the titular anti-heroine back to World War II? Dystopian future reincarnation of Jeb Stuart Smith (the original topkick of the crew)?

  5. If they could move Jonah Hex into a dystopian future, as they did, then why NOT the Haunted Tank?
After all, it's already been seen both in Hell (as I already said; if you haven't read that story then that appeared to be just the tank [or just its SPIRIT, presumably] and the general's ghost, without the actual crew -- and with Hawk able to communicate with the general) and with a version of its original crew in an alternative version of the present (one of those shown in the Superman/Batman story 'Absolute Power')...

  6. Hardly ever read a Haunted Tank. Knew there was a Tank Girl, but not much about. But, the crossover made me laugh. Good one.

  7. @Simreeve: with a complicated (if not downright contradictory) backstory like that, there's twice as many odds, against such a real-world crossover issue, as I thought.

  8. @Trimegistus: The Confederacy wasn't the only foreign power at war with the United States Of America to produce DC heroes. What about Enemy Ace? And he came from an actual, legitimate country not a failed, imaginary one.
