I enjoy looking at Mike Allred's take on
The Silver Surfer. The Surfer is one of those characters that really brings out the psychedelic in his artists, from Kirby onward. I still remember an awesome black light Silver Surfer from my youth, very cool stuff!
This cover leads directly into tomorrows 1200th issue, so be sure to come back!
Oh, I will, Ross. Count on it! :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat rendering...as usual.
Love it.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm confused by the "great rendering" comment, and occasional others like it that appear from time to time... is there a meaning of the word "rendering" that I'm unfamiliar with? You're not drawing these, right? — just compositing them together from existing covers and images, eh?
This has to be one of my favorites. Remember when comic book covers were designed to excite/intrigue/captivate new readers into buying the issue? I would have absolutely picked this one up.
ReplyDeleteWow! 1200 covers! Salute!
ReplyDeleteIt's taking some getting used to - The Allreds's covers for Batman '66; but they are quite trippy and psychedelic for '66...
@Bygrinstwo: I think the term "rendering" has expanded in definition given the proportionate expansion of computers being used for artistic purposes.
ReplyDeleteThat may well be — but I'm also sure I have seen folks say things like "Wow, you really captured the essence of [Character]!". Meanwhile, what I think is going on is highly complex cut-and-paste, which I know ain't easy, and I don't undervalue the technique on display at all.
ReplyDeleteBut if I'm wrong and there is original "pencil-and-brush-on-paper action" here, well, I guess I want to know that — so I can be all the more amazed...!
Great!
ReplyDeleteWas the foreground, with all those DC characters, taken from 'Armageddon Inferno'?
sim reeve, you are correct!
ReplyDeleteBygrinstow, no I never illustrate anything personally, although I often have to create or extend existing elements through use of the various photoshop tools to get a cover to look just right.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's very well done, and just tremendously fun stuff, man. And SO MUCH OF IT! *jaw drop*
ReplyDeleteI agree. It is jaw-droppingly rendered.
ReplyDelete;-D
Trollsing! Help! Help! I'm being repressed! Come see the violence inherent in the interwebs!
ReplyDeleteYou want to talk about confused! I thought anonymous was talking about your fantistic processing of offal into a fine useable by-product. YEESH I thought I was back on Soap-At-Home Blog again!
ReplyDeleteNice use the Armageddon 2001 cover!
Hey, Justin! How about making a New Year's resolution to lighten up, dude? ;-)
