I recently picked up the complete Blu-Ray series of the animated
Spectacular Spider-Man. I had only watched the first season when the show had originally aired. I was glad that I made the purchase because it was a joy to watch the series in full. The character development of the villains as well as Peter's classmates was handled very well and the action scenes were fast paced and inventive. I have seen a handful of episodes of the new Spidey cartoon that replaced it, and in my opinion it is a pale comparison. It's too bad that
Spectacular was moved out of the way to make room for it.
I totally agree! I really enjoyed Spectacular Spider-Man
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand, Spectacular Spiderman was ended because of some deal between Disney and Sony not because of bad ratings. This seems to happen a lot to shows in which Greg Weisman is involved.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you on that latter point, Ross. The show that replaced SSM made Seasons 2 and 3, of the 1960's Spidey cartoon, look like big-budget brilliance, by comparison.*
ReplyDeleteAs for today's artistic offering? Fabulous, as usual. In fact, when I read the now-classic issue of CAPTAIN AMERICAN & THE FALCON, in which Cap took on tarantulas gigantized by the Yellow Claw? I actually pictured Spidey and the Spectre teaming up against them, instead!
*And I hated those seasons!!
I really liked that show too. It, Wolverine and the X-Men, and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes were the start of a new Marvel Animated Universe, a bit more cohesive than the 90's original. BUT, once news broke that Josh Keaton had been replaced by Drake Bell for Spidey's guest appearances, it all went to naught. CURSE YOU, EXECUTIVES!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know the legal status of the MTV Spider-man animated series? The animation looked like video game quality but it was supposed to provide a bridge between the first two Tobey Maguire movies. It ran a few months and came out on DVD about a year later, but that was a few years before Disney acquired Marvel. I doubt that whoever owns it will make it available for home video ever again, but I'm wondering if anyone is allowing it to be streamed.
ReplyDeleteI own the MTV Spidey show. The animation is not so good, but the stories were okay.
