It's funny how the era in which you really got into comics can color your perceptions of certain characters. The Beast to me will always be an Avenger foremost in my mind, because that's where I first discovered him. I love his history with the X-Men and his transition from merely having over-sized hands and feet to the blue furred hero I became a fan of, but I must say I have always hoped that he would return to his position as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes (not to mention the look he sported in those days, his redesigns haven't done much for me).
Ha! For sure.
ReplyDeleteHank McCoy and Simon Williams were the original "Blue and Gold"! My first thought was, The Beast was an X-Man...huh! I think one of the early issues I saw was The Avengers versus The Absorbing Man, was that what he was called? The guy with the ball and chain?
Here's another one for ya, why wasn't The Creeper ever recruited for The Outsiders?...
DC did include The Creeper in the Outsiders in one of their brief later incarnations. He doesn't really seem like the type to hang with a team though, too much of a loose cannon.

ReplyDeleteI feel exactly the same way. The Beast added something to the Avengers that no one else has ever replaced. I especially like the way that his greatest asset to the team was often, not his agility or scientific knowledge, but his ability to think outside the box.
Actually, I'd buy a real word comic featuring this team-up!
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the Beast's look, during his tenure as an Avenger, by the way. It was far superior to his current artistic depiction. Which, truth to tell, makes him look more like a cross between a black bear (via the Knights of Wundagore) and one of Marvel's supernatural werewolves!
And that is definitely _not_ a good thing.
Speaking of Wundagore? I'd like to imagine these are clones of the renedade Sir Kobrah (from what must have been the Hulk's very first visit to the High Evolutionary's Counter-Earth circa 1973).
I rarely think to suggest, and never have suggested, a pairing, because you're the master, Ross. But I got one today. Creeper and Badger. You might think of others for a Lunatic Legion.
ReplyDeleteThis is where you tell me, yeah, you already did that one.
Oh my stars and garters!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised it took me this long to think of this.
ReplyDeleteI'm even more surprised no one else beat me to it.
"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?" ^_^
I'm the same way about the Beast. I first saw him during his tenure in the Avengers and that's how I think of him.
