Doctor Fate and Magik
DC has solicited a new Doctor Fate series, which I was glad to learn because I have always thought he was a really cool hero with a great look. Checking out the solicitations, though, it seems that they are going to have an all-new character take up the mantle rather than use Kent Nelson or one of the others who have previously assumed the role. I know that DC has a long tradition of legacy heroes, but the way they have been switching out who is under the helmet for the past couple of decades has diluted my enjoyment of the character. Just when I get used to one guy, he's gone and everything starts over.
I think the last time I checked in, Kent and Inza were in the great beyond. Kent had used a spell on Opal City for Ted Knight. I never read about the couple that took over from Kent. Kent has always been Dr. Fate. I have no desire to read anyone taking on the helmet of Fate, other than Kent Nelson
ReplyDeleteAmen, Airdave!
ReplyDeleteThere has to be a point where modern businesses, in general (and the current owners of DC, in particular), say "Screw the teens and twen-agers! Our real bread-and-better is the over-30 crowd)
I agree with both previous commentators. While I still enjoy the comic book medium (and love your work on this website Ross), I have totally given up on the current incarnation of DC Comics, which is a dang shame considering my very first comic book was Action 434 waaay back in May 1974!

ReplyDeleteThat's comic books these days, unfortunatley: reboot, reboot, reboot. It's gotten to seem like the only stories they do anymore is origin stories, over and over again. Obviously, that isn't true strictly speaking, but do anything often enough and it will stand out.
The reboots are bad, but I'll forgive a lot if they keep his tower with no doors or windows.
ReplyDeleteI might forgive them if they bring back Mango the Mighty.
ReplyDeleteAmazing
