The cover is the result of a request/challenge from Michael Eury, Editor of the always awesome
Back Issue Magazine. I only have vague memories of The Partridge Family - it didn't make much of an impression on me other than liking some of the music and the fact that I kind of looked like a young Danny Bonaduce (we have since gone in different directions). Still, this idea was too weird not to try. Thanks for the suggestion, Michael!
AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteBatman and Reuben. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThis one rocks! My favorite to date! Now let's see you do something with The Monkees!
ReplyDeleteWeird is right. Batman and Reuben indeed!
ReplyDeleteI watched The Partridge Family as a kid, and there are several moments that still stick in my mind. The most vivid was right after Danny had let a cat of the bag, and Reuben said to him, "If you had a neck, I'd wring it."
(I also tended to wonder about a kid as young as Chris Patridge plying drums well ennough for a band of their caliber, but then I decided, "What the heck, it's just a TV show." In retrospect they might have tried playing with the idea that he was a musical prodigy, but I don't think they ever did.)
Still, you have a fun one here. :)
Detective Chimp, Beppo, and the Monkees take on Grodd and Monsieur Mallah -- call it "Going Ape!"
ReplyDeleteTwo words: Lorrie. Patridge. Wowee-wow-wow! Don't get me started on Shirley Jones!! You can see why she was on The Drew Carrey Show! The '70's...Good times, good times!!
ReplyDeleteIf you're not reading DC's Batman '66, you should get ready to ready Wonder Woman '77 soon, too!
The Joker? I'd think the Penguin would be more likely to plan a crime involving the Partridges.
ReplyDeleteRoss, this might possibly be my favorite cover ever. You're a warped genius.
Now how about doing something with the Honeymooners?
If you feature the Honeymooners they should be paired with the Flintstones since Fred is just a prehistoric version of Ralph.
ReplyDeleteThat's a thought. I was imagining the Honeymooners meeting the Hulk, with Alice or Norton making a crack about Ralph being the Incredible Bulk.
ReplyDeleteI think Ash would put it best: Groovy!
ReplyDeleteDavid (Keith Partridge) Cassidy also played the Mirror Master on TV in a 1990 episode of The Flash. This has nothing to do with the cover, but I just wanted to mention it.
ReplyDeleteI was in lust (young lust, it's true, I was only 7) with David Cassidy. And did you know that the woman playing Laurel Lance in Arrow is his daughter, Katie Cassidy?
ReplyDeleteYou won me over with Batman & Reuben.
ReplyDeleteIf you do do The Honeymooners, you could have Alice in the Watcher's Blue area of the moon. "You finally did it Ralph."
ps. I did not know that Katie was the daughter of David. Cool!
I thought the Martian Manhunter/Cookie Monster cover was fondest, but this one is even more so! LoL.
ReplyDeleteOut of the classic sitcoms of the 60s/early 70s, Partridge Family was one I never really got into (Monkees too, but it was rarely rerun here when I was a kid). I did love Susan Dey though!
ReplyDeleteI am still longing for the Batman 66/Agent 86 - Maxwell Smart team-up, something I've wanted to see since I was 8 years old!
Thanks for the memories!
Seriously, though: wouldn't the Penguin have made a more logical baddie to go after the Partridges?
ReplyDeleteGreat cover as always Ross! You're really branching out and mixing your franchises with great fun! I second a Batman '66 and a Maxwell Smart cross over. Or maybe a Maxwell Smart and Peter Seller's Inspector Clouseau cross over. That's just good fun.
ReplyDeleteBatman and Reuben... Heh!
Gregg
I've got to agree with my namesake and Bob Buethe. The Joker would have been more ideal as part of, say, a Batman/Monkees team-up. Especially, given the (admittedly indirect) Jack Nicholson connection!
ReplyDeleteRIP, David Cassidy and Adam West. :-(
