Bouncing Boy and Speedball

I remember Bouncing Boy standing out to me among his many Legion of Super-Heroes teammates,  Even when he was not using his bouncing powers, he was illustrated as not having the typical super-heroic physique.  Indeed, he looked like he could stand to lose a few pounds!  It was nice to be reminded that heroes came in all shapes and sizes.

  1. I always felt Speedball was a terrıble creatıon. Unınterestıng powers and costume to boot. An example of the "meh.." late 1990s. Meanwhıle, over at Image comıcs...

  2. Yep! You could say that, in the physically fit sense, Chuck Taine was the pre-bitten Peter Parker of the 30th century.

  3. I agree with you fully, Ross. It doesn't take a great physique to be a hero; it only takes a great heart.

  4. If the labels are meant to be original art credit -- isn't the Bouncing Boy from a story early in the S/LSH period when BB gets his powers back? James Sherman art, I want to say. Definitely not LaRocque.

  5. Oooh. Michael Netzer Bouncing Boy art. It was a back story that he drew in which Chuck got his powers back by throwing his body on to a force field.

  6. What caught my attentıon about Bouncıng Boy was that he was ın a relatıonshıp wıth a GORGEOUS Legıonaıre (was ıt Shadow Lass). That gave me hope as a short, chubby nerd back then!

  8. Michael got it in one. They even got married, if I recall correctly, though I don't remember for sure whether they ever had kids before the Legion was thrust into Reboot Hell.

  9. I've been reading a lot of '70s Legion of Superheroes lately. They were so great then. They're one of those groups, like the Doom Patrol and the Marvel Family, that have a clearly defined peak (or Golden Age), and have struggled (and failed) in subsequent reboots to recapture that magic.
