Ever since I featured Ace and the Dogs of War, an all-canine team, I have gotten requests for a feline equivalent. It took me a while to come up with something suitable, because let's face it - dogs are a lot more agreeable than cats. I love the little guys but they certainly have their own agendas.

ReplyDeleteHa ha, I love Tigger and even played him in a grade school musical once. He would fit in with the orange Tabby theme, but I think he would be too proactive for this lazy bunch. Might be fun as a new member though!
ReplyDeleteTigger would be the Capt Carrot of an otherwise unmotivated bunch of watch members. Good for providing plot hooks and the occasional curveball.
ReplyDeleteIs it my imagination or is the ratio of famous newspaper cats to famous comics cats far greater that the comparable ratio for dogs? I know Heathcliff had his own Marvel comic, but he comes from newspapers. Streaky, Zabu, Hairball, Sebastian, that mangy yellow cat the Justice League kept... didn't Baron Winter have a leopard?... Agatha Harkness' familiar... I can't even remember the names for many of them. But Krazy Kat, Bucky Katt, Felix, Garfield and the others pictured above, they easily have greater name/image recognition, don't they?
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, Krypto, Lockjaw, Ace the Bat-Hound, Rex, etc. probably come in second to movie dogs (Lassie, Rin-Tin-Tin, etc.) but must be more memorable than Dagwood Bumstead's dog (Daisy, I think). Sandy and Snowy would give them a run for their money, but would Devil(The Phantom)?

ReplyDeleteZeke: On a comics blog, my first instinct for Captain Carrot is "--and the Amazing Zoo Crew," but I suspect you mean the one from Discworld.
@Mediancat: Snoopy definitely tips the scales, but the point of my question is whether characters like Snoopy are typical or outliers in their medium. For instance, Garfield is phenomenally famous in newspaper strips, moreso than Fat Freddy's cat in comics. Sabrina's cat Sebastian, however, has made the leap to both animation and prime time TV and occasionally been granted his own feature. Garfield's more famous than both, but far more famous than one when compared to the other. Similarly, Snoopy is more famous than both Krypto and Orkie. Almost nobody has heard of Orkie, but even people who don't read comics have heard of Krypto. So, if we were comparing the fame/name-recognition of animals in one medium versus another, the first question would be, which animals are typical of each medium? Do comics have more Kryptos or more Orkies? Do newspapers have more Snoopys or more Farleys?
