Dr. Fate and Doc Savage

Doc Savage already serves as sort of a bridge between comic companies.  I remember Marvel having the rights to the character in the 70's, where Doc had his own series and even met with Spider-Man and The Thing.  DC later got control of the rights and we saw Doc meet up with Batman eventually.  I like to think of it all as one long continuity.

  1. I remember Doc Savage had a pretty cool TV movie on back in the 70s.

  2. Doc didn't have a TV movie. he had a theatrical movie produced by George Pal (his final film) and starring Ron Ely that was released by Warner Brothers in 1975.

And while I am a huge fan of Marvel's 1975-77 black and white Doc Savage comic magazine series, I wasn't quite as impressed with their earlier color comic book series. And as far as I'm concerned DC's efforts with the character have been just this side of being an abomination.

  3. Doc got better treatment in the Millennium comics (at least the first limited series they did.)

The one appearance of Doc that DC did well, IMO was in the crossover of his title and The Shadow Strikes. SS was exceptionally well-written and Doc was better written there than in his own book.

It's great seeing Doc turn up here! I would never have thought to put him with Fate, but ancient mysteries and lost civilizations are so much a pat of Doc's stories that I like the idea.

  4. I have no complaints with Doc's depiction, by DC and Marvel, back in the Seventies. If for no other reason than they inspired me to start reading some of the paperback novelizations of his original pulp-fiction adventures! And, my kudos to you for making this version of Doc look so much like those paperback covers.

  5. Sorry to get off topic, but as a note to Ross: is it just my computer or is there a problem with your blog's banner today?

  6. Great cover Ross! Makes me think you should an all-Doctor's group: Fate, Savage, Who, Frankenstein, Strange, Syn, "Hawkeye" Pierce, Sheldon Cooper, Mid-Night, Horrible, Eclipse, Samson, Manhatten, Doc (GI Joe), the Doctor (Authority), John Watson (Sherlock) and maybe McCoy (Star Trek) could be some possibilities... :)

Maybe call them the Cliincians or the Attendings...
