The Hobbits and The Hulk

I was a Peter Jackson fan after seeing The Frighteners (a movie that convinced me that The Spectre could work in live action, watch it and you'll see what I mean), and I was very encouraged when I heard he was going to take on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.  Still, I wasn't prepared for just how lavishly those great books would be recreated.  Sure, there are changes and omissions (I was hoping to see Tom Bombadil), but it was still amazing how much he captured onscreen.  I had my reservations about the much shorter The Hobbit being stretched into three films, but I have to admit to being thoroughly entertained by the first installment and am looking forward to the second. So here's a director who can film an ensemble cast in a film packed with battles, amazing abilities and special effects, all while staying true to the source material, and isn't afraid to stay with a franchise... I think a Justice League movie could be an interesting next move - DC/Warner Brothers, are you listening?

  1. That's just awesome, put a smile on my face just reading the title before I saw the picture.

  2. This is a nice, smoothly done cover, with what looks to be an interesting story behind it.

Tom Bombadil was omitted from the LOTR films for good reason: Tolkien himself didn't really want him in the story in the end. He'd created Tom with a certain story function in mind for "Return of the King," hinted at when Tom puts on the One Ring and isn't affected by it, but then decided against it.

And of course when a book is made into a movie there's going to be stuff left out. Most novels are just too long. Even making LOTR into a series of six three-hour movies (the three volumes are each divided into two "Books"), there would have been just too much. I think Peter did a fantastic job in paring the story down to the essentials, while remaining true to the spirit of the original material.

If my "Realm Hunter" novels were ever made into a movie (or set of movies), Peter Jackson would be my first choice to direct. (I doubt he'll ever even hear of them, but it would be extremely cool.)

  3. Ross, you do know that Jackson has plans for a Justice League Dark film. Starring the Spectre among others. So let's hope it all comes true eventually. I'd love to see his take on the Spectre. And a well done Constantine as well.

  4. Well timed cover! It's charming.

I'm currently re-reading Lord of the Rings (just finished The Two Towers) and it's making me eager to have another go at the films.

The Hobbit was less successful to my eye, too much CG too little human, but I'll withhold final judgement to the end.

    Rip Off

  5. @Isaac I think you are confusing Peter Jackson with Guillermo Del Toro. It is GDT who has mentioned an interest in doing a film about DC's supernatural characters like Deadman, Swamp Thing, Zatana and the Spectre.

  6. Unfortunately, I don't have much expectation for a live action Justice League...I'm a DC fan, and, so far The Dark Knight Rises, Green Lantern and Man of Steel have been missed opportunities...They may be trying, but Disney/Marvel has had more hits than misses...

  7. Well, if the Hulk likes his grub, (historically that's been the case) he's come the right place. They eat breakfast three times in the Shire. Don't know if they got baked beans, though.

  8. "I was hoping to see Tom Bombadil". I don't believe that sentence had ever been written or spoken aloud before now. ;)
