The Spectre and Doctor Strange Vs. Nightmare!

Of all of Marvel's second phase movie plans, what has me the most intrigued is Doctor Strange. Some vague plot points and characters have been released and so far it sounds like they are on the right track.  Still, what I really need to hear is who is going to star as Strange and who will direct.  It's one of the tougher properties to pull off and  hopefully Marvel will make the right decisions.

  1. Edward Norton, Viggo Mortensen and Leonardo DiCaprio all seem to act well with goatees! They and a few others would actually do quite well in this role, so I'm really excited at the prospects of any ONE of them stepping into the role. And Marvel/Disney has an impeccable record at this point when it comes to casting (unlike a certain certain rival across the street).

  2. I'd be surprised I Marvel went to Norton again, but I could definitely see Mortensen in the role. I've heard DiCaprio (and Depp) mentioned, but I don't know if they would melt into the role.

  3. The latest guy rumored to play Strange is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I think he's a good fit, albeit a bit young. But of course, if they see it as a movie franchise, it's better to start with a young actor so tehy won't be too old in the sequels (with Robert Downey Jr. as the exception).

  4. Gordon-Levitt is in his thirties; he only plays young. In fact, he's the same age as Chris Evans, who passed himself off as a young man applying for military service just a couple years ago in "Captain America" despite being ten years older than the character.

I'm just hoping Russell Brand isn't willing to cut his hair short for the part. If you consider just his face and body type, just looks alone, he's perfect. At least until he starts ad-libbing...

  5. Gotta say that from a purely physical standpoint, nobody embodies the slightly more macho Doctor Strange of my youth than a gracefully aging Tom Selleck:

That said, no way does Magnum have the acting chops to embody the gravitas of the Sorcerer Supreme. Alas.

It needs to be a heavy actor, Strange should be, power-wise, on another level than the punching and kicking crowd. Sort of adult-supervision, with a touch of deus ex machina on tap if needed. The upper limits of his power should be left vague, held back because of philosophical/deeper understanding reasons until the plot calls for it...

I'm tempted to say Dep, but I doubt there's enough $ in it for him; ironic considering all the crapola roles he's made his fortunes from.

Hope they don't get bogged down in a full blown origins movie, but that's coming from a fan. Be way cooler to have him just jump in and pull the Avengers out of deep trouble and introduce his back story on the go...

Given holywood's inability to get past comic book origins, I'm not holding my breath...

And yeah, Russel Bran DOES have some Strange in him... A shame he's a comedic actor only (as far as I know).

Lets hope 1: it gets made, 2: it is serious and well written, and 3: incorporates some full blown Ditko LSD inter dimensional visuals into the mix!
