Calvin and Snoopy are two of the most classic comic strip characters, and they share one major trait in common. They both have incredible imaginations and picture themselves in all sorts of exciting roles: space captain, world war II fighting ace, private detective, prize winning author, and of course - masked heroes! The strips that depicted those imaginary worlds are among my favorites, and you can really tell that Charles Schulz and Bill Watterson put their hearts into those adventures.
I have not had a chance to read the comic based on the Peanuts strip - is that a BOOM! imprint comic?
ReplyDeleteI think Watterson was genius in that he kept everything to the strip and the single format. As much as we all want a plush Hobbes, or action figures or licensed memorabilia, it is kinda cool to just have the strips.
On the other side of the coin, living in Minnesota and visiting Camp Snoopy, before it became Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America, I wish I'd gotten on of the many Peanuts figures...
It was really eye-opening and humbling to read parts of Charles Schultz' unauthorized biography a few years. I guess to just discover he was human like the rest of us. The artistic and literary highpoint of his strip (the mid 1970s) was during a period of stress and depression in his marriage. The Little Red Haired girl was based on the publisher's secretary that he was having an affair with. I didn't feel this information was tabloidic, just that he was human like the rest of us. Really powerful!
ReplyDeleteIt's "Schulz" -- no T.
ReplyDeleteIf this was an actual comic, I think this issue would sell like crazy. These are two classic characters in their great superhero personas.

ReplyDeleteFor those who don't remember Snoopy as the Masked Marvel:

Best cover ever!!
ReplyDeleteOf course you know this means people will now expect to see Phantom Eagle or Enemy Ace tangling with a certain Sopwith Camel. (He was a WWI flying ace, by the way, unless you were referring to Calvin in WWII.)
ReplyDeleteEnemy Ace? Stay tuned...
ReplyDeleteNow I want to see Catwoman team up with Hobbes. Or maybe Garfield.
ReplyDeleteThe Tick & The Badger.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore this. I gotta show my gal this...I bought her the C&H oversized slipcase a couple years ago. She's gonna love this one.
