Dick Tracy Vs. Solomon Grundy

Dick Tracy already has a great line up of enemies, featuring all sorts of misshapen and disfigured criminals.  Is it much of a stretch that he begin to run into the superhuman variety of outlaw?   Would his years battling the denizens of the underworld prepare him to tackle a supernatural foe?  I don't know, but it might be fun to read about!

  1. I grew up in the '70's following Dick Tracy in the Chicago Tribune. I loved all the gadgets he used to fight crime. He was like James Bond and Batman!

It would be pretty cool to see him cut loose in the DC or Marvel Universe.

Tribune should just pay Warren Beatty whatever he wants to get the film rights back.

  2. I thought Beatty's film in the '80s was brilliant. The look of the film, using primary colors as it straight out of the comic strip. Don't know why he and Walt Disney never returned with a sequel, or rebooted it (I think Hugh Jackman would be great in the role.) There are behind the scenes studio politics and drama that are beyond our pay grade of comprehension.

  3. I, too, would have loved to have seen a Dick Tracy sequel. I've mentioned before here how much I wanted to play the criminal known as the Pouch, and I certainly would have written to Warren about it had a sequel been announced.

The story in this case is an interesting idea. The funny thing is, the art doesn't seem as unified as most of the covers you've put up, Ross, yet the only artist I see tagged is Chester Gould. Did Chet draw Grundy here, or is the artist unknown?

There are a few Batman villains that I can think of who would be a good fit for Tracy: the Penguin, Man-Bat, Mr. Freeze, Baby Doll, and Killer Croc to name just a few off the top of my head. And Tracy and Bats do seem like a fairly natural team-up, especially if Jim Gordon is out of the way for some reason.
