The Joker and Godzilla
I'm still waiting for a great Godzilla movie. I can watch all the classic man-in-suit Toho films for their kitsch factor, but they are hardly very convincing. I remember being very excited when I heard the folks behind Independence Day would be updating the franchise, but then the design of the monster, cartoonish characters and silly Godzilla-babies side plot ultimately undermined it for me. Really, the closest I have seen to cool Godzilla action is the film Cloverfield. Reading reports of the latest Comicon, it seems like the teaser for the new Godzilla film took everyone by surprise and was one of the big hits of the convention. This has me cautiously optimistic, and I hope that footage is available on the web soon, because I am dying to see it.
I have to say--this is my favourite cover you have created thus far.
ReplyDeleteHow to train your dragon... Brilliant!
There were two or three Japanese movies that came out right after the American one in which the old Godzilla was consumed by his own internal radioactive meltdown and replaced by his son. If you see them in widescreen and subtitled, instead of cropped and dubbed, they're great. I know that cinephiles say that about every movie, but with most Godzilla movies, especially the ones made since the mid-90's, it's like you're watching two completely different movies. The difference is as stunning as with "Ben Hur" or "Lawrence of Arabia". (Imagine watching "Ben Hur" through a keyhole while Jerry Lewis dubs all the voices. If you hadn't seen it before you probably wouldn't have assumed the director's cut was as good as it is. But that's how most Americans have always watched Godzilla movies.)
ReplyDeleteSo crazy it just might work!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ken. This is the best cover so far... or, at the very least, the scariest.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm probably crazy, but I actually enjoyed the film with Matthew Broderick. I divorce it in my mind from the main franchise (which, I think, was the intent), and it really does have many great moments.
As founder and pastor of the First Church of Godzilla, I must commend your effort. All praise the Great Scaly One who protects us with his fiery atomic love. It might be a tough love on occasion, but such harshness is brought on by our own folly.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome cover. I really the How To Train Your Dragon book.

Tony: This blogger, for one, would like to welcome our new Lizard Overlord.
ReplyDeleteI just saw something on Facebook that I think would make an interesting cover, related to this one.
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion: The Joker vs. KISS.
The big G doped up on Joker Venom and driven mad, turned loose on Tokyo. Its a winner.
ReplyDeleteShowa-era Godzilla was undeniably more convincing than Matthew Brod-zilla.
