The Legion of Super-Heroes and The Man-Thing
One of the fun parts of this project is scouring over covers from every era of comics for images to use. There are definitely some artists who really stand out at the top of the field for me when it comes to cover images that are both beautiful to look at and which really sell the story being told inside. In my opinion, Marvel's greatest cover artist was Gil Kane, while the DC title easily goes to Nick Cardy, whose work I used here. Whether it was a Superhero, Horror, Western or even Romance title, Cardy was always able to capture a pivotal moment from the issue and present it in a very enticing way. I would see those covers and just had to find out what happened inside. It's no wonder DC utilized him as their main cover artist for so many titles.
....and Ross, no mention of the groovy '70s inspired costumes of the LSH? Superheroes & bell bottoms are always a good mix (ask Dazzler!) great cover
ReplyDeletethe past few covers have achieved a special level of awesomness! Hope to see Icon or Hardware from Milestone make an appearance here.
ReplyDeleteambush bug and madcap or impossible man also mr fantastic and elongated man krypto and lockjaw johna hex and two gun kid
ReplyDeleteAnother "I'd never have thought of it, but, cool!" cover. I envy your imagination and talent painfully. On the topic of legion costumes.... the early 1970s were a good time to be an adolescent boy... even if I wasn't one until the late 1970s/early 1980s, I still had my old Legion comics. Princess Projectra's 70's outfit was... well, yeah, I'll be in my bunk.
ReplyDeletePS: Capcha for this was "Clessa Ementak", which sure sounds like a Legionnaire's secret identity.
PPS: When I was a kid and heard the news talking about "Legionnaire's Disease", I thought it had something to do with the comic. Gimme a break, I was like, 10 or something.
My favorite costumes were Phantom Girl's which I used here, and of course Shadow Lass!
ReplyDeleteAnother "I'd never have thought of it, but, cool!" cover.
ReplyDeleteYes, what Lizard said.
Karate Kid did not wear a head band - that is the first Invisible Kid. Tag is wrong.
ReplyDeleteYou know, we never officially learned Devil Fish's origin. Who's to say that he wasn't the Man-Thing brought through time and inter-dimensional space (and transformed in transit) to help clean up the polluted oceans of 31st century DCU Earth?
