The Thing and The Savage Dragon

This one was a request from Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen, so how could I refuse? The Dragon would be another character that would fit in on a Ben Grimm poker night. I wonder if Larsen knew that his creation would endure for so long when he started drawing pictures of The Dragon as a young kid? I had a whole stable of heroes myself: Alastor the Avenger, Sonic Man, The Gimmick, Clay, and Machine Man (I was crushed when I found out there was already a character with that name!) Alas, they never made it past my grade school years, so I have to hand it to Larsen for keeping his childhood character alive and thriving.

  1. Congratulations for getting on a creator's radar. I hope he appreciates that you used a cover with a "Savage" pedigree as the basis for the Savage Dragon mash-up: isn't that the issue where Ben teamed up with Doc Savage? The Dragon seems like a natural to use, request or not, since he's had so many guests in his own title like Madman, TMNT, Destroyer Duck, The Maxx, etc.

  2. Yup it was originally Doc Savage on the cover. It is indeed nice to hear a creator's reaction. I've gotten nice comments from Paul Chadwick, Jeff Smith, Tony Isabella, Neil Gaiman and others as well. One positive thing about this blog is that I have been able in some small way to provide enjoyment to creators I have long admired.

  3. Wow, congrats! Getting feedback from creators, let alone HAVING the creator of a character make a request is amazingly cool!

That is the best thing about comics. Creators and fans.

  6. Just a note to add that I had a Sonic Man in my childhood past as well. Maybe I'll send you a scan someday!

  7. As much as I'd enjoy this comic, I think a Savage Dragon/Doc Savage one would be incredible.

  10. It's back. Thanks for the heads up... sometimes TinyPic just "loses" and image, it's annoying. That's the second one I found this week.
