Logan would have already been in operation when the All-Stars were formed, so it's not out of the questions that they would cross paths. Hos healing factor would be a big help against that pesky Spear.

I may be misremembering, here -- and, please, feel free to correct me, if so ;) -- but doesn't the Spear of Destiny only control the personalities and impulses of magic-wielding heroes, or at least those with some sort of magical background/origin, as per ALL-STAR SQUADRON #3 or #4? (I forget which issue number Roy Thomas first established this particular bit of business.)
ReplyDeleteBecause, other than Sir Justin, I don't see anyone here who ought to have any specific Spear-related difficulties. (Again, apologies in advance if advanced age is playing hob with my comic book recollections, here.)
You could say Libby's connection to the Liberty Bell, and the Hawk's ancient curse would make them prone to the magics of the spear.

Plus, JQ's super-speed formula--3X29YZ(4A)-- was recently ret-conned into being a numerological recitation. A mathemantra, if you will!. While Hank Heywood and Robert Crane were clinically dead for a bit prior to their respective medical miracles. So, that might make them vulnerable to the Spear's reputed powers in a necromantic sense.

DeletePlus, as was depicted in mainstream Marvel Comics, much more recently, even Wolverine's healing factor doesn't make him immune to being mystically brainwashed by cults like the Hand while he's clinically dead, himself.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, I'm sure I read somewhere that the reason why Superman didn't win the war for the Allies is because he couldn't get near the spear. I suspect that may have been an Elseworlds or similar, however.
ReplyDeleteNo, it was part of mainstream pre-Crisis continuity that Kryptonians (at least on Earths One and Two) were vulnerable to true magic as well as kryptonite radiation.
DeleteAnd Dr. Manhattan has probably restored that to the over-all continuity of the DC megaverse, post-Doomwatch.
DeleteI had the same concern as Anon@7:11. I don't think any of the heroes shown were involved in the incident mentioned, but it was definitely the magic-based heroes, plus Superman, who were affected.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think Logan's saying that he should be the only one to go; only that they need him along. Sir Justin and the Hawks would probably need to stay behind, but at least the Atom can also go along, and I'm not too sure about the limitations of the other ground-pounders. My take is, those five could go along to get him close enough to do what needs to be done, but only he can get close enough for that.
Otherwise, it's not much of a team-up, is it?
My suspicion is that the mission involves retrieving the Spear of Destiny and bringing it into the Allies' hands, as a predicate (unrevealed to the heroes) to the invasion of Normandy.
Logan has no trust of these strangers and figures he can do it better himself.
ReplyDeleteTrust and faith aren't the same thing. Real trust has to be earned before it's given, just like respect. And the best way to earn it is to extend some blind faith in the hope that it's rewarded rather than betrayed. If WWII-era Logan was unable to demonstrate even a modicum of such faith than he'd be well and truly hopeless!

@Simreeve. No he had not received his adamantium yet. And because he was not keeping his memory at the time he did not use claws at all. Uncanny X-Men #268 showed he was not using his claws when he teamed with Captain America and Black Widow during WWII. Therefore for this image he somehow traveled back in time.
ReplyDeleteWeill, if those aren't just very well-polished bone claws, then this would have to be Wolverine from either the Australian-based days of the X-men (including a mutant Aboriginal shaman called Gateway) or the more-recent days on civilized Krakoa and his teleportational "land-bridges".
