Superman and Beta Ray Bill
Sure, it's easy to accept a hero from another planet when they have movie star good looks. What if your savior has a face that only a mother could love?
I love that Nick Cardy cover art from the early to mid 70s. It's no exaggeration to say that I might not be a comics reader today if it wasn't for some of Mr. Cardy's compelling Action Comics covers.
Most people might consider that a half-serious rhetorical question, Ross. But, you still raise a valid point. One that DC themselves tried to answer with that now-classic Elseworlds story arc "The Nail." And the food-for-thought that cooked up is just as valid now as it was then!
Oh, and to the original post: Normally, I'd say that it'd take a while for the public to get used to, but he'd grow on us over time. These days, though, I'm not so sure now well people would respond to a protector who doesn't look like "one of Us."
Although, they've never done a feature-length reboot of him. In fact, the last talking horse movie I can recall making the rounds of multiplexes was 1988's HOT TO TROT (with John Candy doing the lead equine's voice-over)!

ReplyDeleteAnd for the sequel? Beta Ray Bill vs. LOBO (the Main Man)!
ReplyDeleteDidn't Bob Greenwade once request a "movie poster" advertising a live-action Lobo flick written and directed by Stephen King (the Maine Man)?
DeleteNo, Beta Ray Bill against Metallo: Korbonite against Corben.
DeleteCary: I think I may have. It'd probably be something along the lines of Lobo vs. Christine.
DeleteWith Christine as a Decepticon?
DeleteTentative title: "The Korbonite Maneuver"!
ReplyDelete@Anon@8:13: Groan! #BadPunNoCookie
ReplyDeleteWm. Shatner: "Why everyone hated the pun remains...UNEXPLAINED!"

ReplyDeleteSad, but true. :-(
DeleteDepends if the hero has a horse's face to relate to. Mr Ed did well enough.

DeleteIt didn't do manure at the box office.
