Yes, I know that Dial "H" For Heroes For Hire was another way to go with this team up. I thought that might be a little too obvious though, so I decided to take the tale in a slightly different angle by having Robby summon forth the champion of Eternia.
You are really on great form right now. Another inspired notion. And the artistic combination really works!

ReplyDeleteWow; Ross; just "Wow!"; this cover is not something I ever would have thought of; but it all works so well together. Roby turning himself into He-Man with the H-Dial is brilliant; as is telling Luke and Danny that they aren't needed. Amazing work all around.

ReplyDeleteThis is a clever idea. Dial H for Heroes for Hire would've been a bit awkward anyway, since you'd have a choice of either having Robby Reed turn into two heroes at once, or having Vicki Grant turn into a male hero (without turning Chris King into a female). Either of those (modifying the latter into a double gender-swap) might be interesting stories, but neither would quite fit here.
ReplyDeleteOne "Dial H" story that comes to mind was when Chris wondered what would happen if he dialed up a different word than "HERO," and noticed that he could also spell out "HORROR." Dialing that word turned him into a rampaging monster, but what if the STFU version turned him into Man-Thing? Who could Vicki turn into to help with that? Tank Girl? Witchblade? Ghost? Jocasta?

Not that this isn't fine, but "Dial 'H' For Heroes for Hire" could've worked with a gender-swapped Iron Fist. Might've been tricky, but it's not like Marvel hasn't become notorious for doing that sort of thing in recent years!

I knew that Tundro fired "energy rocks," but I never understood the "came from the future" part. I kept waiting for an origin episode to explain it, but if there was one, I never saw it.
Also, Richard Morrissey said that his inspiration for GLUNK (Adventure Comics #479) came from wondering what would happen if Robby dialed into a form with no fingers. But Marv Wolfman made GLUNK a villain (sort of) instead of a hero, so that was never addressed.
I am not alone! I just found a forum with a post from 2016 by someone else who remembers a Herculoids theme song. He remembers different lyrics than I do, though: "Somewhere in the future, live the Herculoids, out in outer space, among the asteroids. Igoo and Dorno, Tundro and Zok, electro-dragons and energy rocks, somewhere in the future live the Herculoids."

ReplyDeleteThat so-called theme song might have been a novelty 45 rpm phonograph record inspired by the cartoon show. Similar to how "E.T." inspired Neil Diamond to write "Turn On Your Heart Light" (which is not on the original movie soundtrack).

BB that was a promo that was made in the early days of the show and they were still developing it. They did changes even after a show was on tv. You a Star Trek fan? You might remember a gravestone with James R Kirk on it instead of James T Kirk.
ReplyDelete@Fisher Timestreamer: I've often felt that that gravestone was from a parallel universe where Jim Kirk had died, as a teenager, from Vegan choriomeningitis. With the consequent ripple effect culminating in a galaxy where "the Borg are everywhere!" (alternate Will Riker, "Parallels").

ReplyDeleteThere was a Star Trek novel, "Q Squared" by Peter David, that gave an explanation for that gravestone. It also connected the galactic energy barrier and Squire Trelaine to the Q Continuum.
The "Q Continuum" trilogy by Greg Cox was better.
