Han Solo eventually grudgingly accepted the concept of The Force, but I wonder how he would react if he found himself having to fight side by side with a space-faring superhero. I'm guessing that Han might wonder what space Ghost's motives would be, but as long as they had a common enemy to pursue they would make for a formidable team.
not too sure who space ghost is but an interesting costume,
ReplyDeleteHan is bound to end up having to deal with the problem he brings..
This is not Space Stars but the original S.G. WOW!! Shame H. Ford was never on the C.B.S. show, Falcon Quest. What a fantastic cover.
ReplyDelete(Simon- Space Ghost was the lead in a C.B.S. Saturday morning half hour cartoon show in 1966. His power bands could produce energy in a variety of ways and combinations, plus he could turn invisible. He had two wards and a ship, the Phantom Cruiser that was able to turn invisible and a home base of The Ghost Planet. An origin was never given to him during his time on TV.)
To what Tobor says, Simon, I would humbly add that the initial concept for Space Ghost--as mentally pictured by legendary pioneering comic book artist Alex Toth--was Batman in outer space. With the animation for the cartoon series being done by the equally legendary Hanna-Barbera studios. And in a much-more realistic fashion than they had ever done human supporting characters for their Funny Talking Animals!
ReplyDeleteA prime example of what I mean would be their 1964 prime time one-season wonder: "Jonny Quest (The Original Series)."
IIRC the show was called Falcon CREST. Not sure about the reason for the pun, though. Is Blue Falcon in this issue too? :)
ReplyDeleteNo, but the Millennium Falcon is.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing it's both a punny allusion to the TV series mentioned by Anon751 as well as a reference to their joint mission. A quest, or search, for loved ones taken captive.
ReplyDeleteCould Leia, Jan, and Jase have been enthralled by the last living descendant of Vuffi Ra's people's inventors?
To Be Continued in "STARRO WARS!"
Does anyone else here remember a cartoon character named Batfink whose arch-enemy was a mad scientist who sounded like Luthor after inhaling too much helium? Well, how about a cover wher he's somehow stolen the Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic? Causing two living planets to combine forces against him.
ReplyDeleteIn the spirit of Bob Greenwade, I'd like to suggest...
"Ego & Mogo Vs. Hugo Agogo!"
I only vaguely remember Batfink -- but one of its animators, Myron Waldman, was a friend of mine. He had a long career, working on Popeye, Betty Boop, and Superman for Fleischer Studios, the animated Gulliver's Travels movie, and drew two syndicated comic strips, "Happy the Humbug" and "Flower Potts."
DeleteIn my own imagination I came to think of Space Ghost as the future evolution of the Phantom's legacy, battling space pirates. As such, I think he would be unhappy to team up with Solo, must be a really bad mutual enemy to get them to put aside those feelings.
ReplyDeleteI think your read on Han, in this situation, is correct. I'm not sure Anon@9:51 has it right, though; SG might find working with a smuggler distasteful, but if this is post-A New Hope, he'd deal with it. Now, the Star Wars character that he'd really have a problem working with, but might under the right circumstances, is Hondo Ohnaka.
ReplyDeleteAnd I still (after not mentioning it for a couple of years) would love to see Hondo meet the Starjammers this coming 19 September (International Talk Like a Pirate Day).
And now Daviticus has me thinking about Blue Falcon on the Millennium Falcon. It might be interesting, with the right story. (And maybe toss Sam Wilson into the mix for good measure!)
@Anon@9:28: You've captured my spirit quite well. I congratulate you.
I'm here to help (as is Ross, thanks!) Also I like Bob's and Anon928's ideas!
ReplyDeleteBatfink and his infamous "wings of steel". Probably wouldn't air today thanks to his Chinese stereotype sidekick.
ReplyDeleteI first saw Space Ghost on Hanna-Barbera's World Of Super Adventure as a kid and enjoyed it, not knowing it was a rerun of an old Saturday Morning show at the time. I know people dump on Space Stars but I rather enjoyed it. Jan gets a boyfriend, some of the new villains were decent threats for Space Ghost and his young friends, and I enjoyed watching it. Even the new Phantom Cruiser (mark 2) I didn't hate though I do see why some prefer the visual appeal of the original design, like his version of the Batmobile.
Admittedly Astro from the Jetsons becoming a space cop in the comedic segment was not my favorite and I usually tuned them out unless they were teaming with the Herculoids or something. Teen Force was a good addition to the HB superhero lineup and I wish they got more attention than a brief asset reuse in Scooby-Doo: Mask Of The Blue Falcon.
@ShadowWingTronix: Karate (Batfink's version of Kato) was actually a Japanese stereotype. But, yeah, you're right. In today's p.c. climate, even deliberate parodies of such stereotypes would be seen as needlessly racist. So, God forbid, anybody comes out with a compilation of Filmation's "WILL THE REAL JERRY LEWIS PLEASE SIT DOWN?" on DVD!
ReplyDeleteEspecially, the episodes featuring the Charlie Chan parody, Hong Kong Flewis.
@Bob Greenwade: in light of your ongoing theory, can you visualize Ross bringing to life Grodd and Ultron fighting over Cy-Gor (from the Spawn franchise)?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous My mistake. It's been years since I've seen it and only a few episodes. Japanese does make more sense if they named the dude Karate.
ReplyDelete@Cary: The only barrier to my visualizing that is my unfamiliarity with Cy-Gor.
ReplyDeleteNot one of you has mentioned Blip the Space Monkey. NOT ONE OF YOU.

Right, we need to see a team-up between Blip and Gleek.
Oh, I remember Batfink. His wings of steel almost caused him to drown one time. Ah, and Blip has saved SG's bacon a few times. But instead relying on technology, perhaps Space Ghost will learn to use the Force. And maybe someday, Solo will meet up with Jonny Quest. Han seems like one of the more dicier characters the Quest team would have to contend with. Right here, on ABC!
ReplyDeleteBut Space Ghost will NOT let the Wookie win.
ReplyDelete@Alec Semicognito: I thought it was obvious. The Millenium Falcon was tracing Blip's pet transponder! Blip having invisibly stowed away on the hijacked Phantom Cruiser.
ReplyDeleteI remember Space Stars well. I didn't think it was half bad.
ReplyDeleteDepends if you saw Space Ghost when he first came out in 1966. Big difference ..especially the use of the Phantom Cruiser.
ReplyDeleteToo true! The Phantom Cruiser '66 was worlds above any other cartoon spaceship at that time. Especially the one flown by Space Angel!*
ReplyDelete*Imagine Buck Rogers with Nick Fury's eye patch...and Clutch Cargo's animation and voice-dubbing.
