Katana and Captain America
This is another good example of a cover in which I had to de-clutter and extend the background before adding in any new elements. Here's a peek at the behind the scenes process:
it’s Katana’s turn to let Cap get turned in a kentucky fried… she has a lot more attitude than the Falcon…. and her soul sword is always hungry for more…
I remember this issue! Although, the cover's word balloons were--as usual, back then--a tad misleading.* Still, you did a good job integrating the original images of Cap and Zemo II with Katana. There is absolutely no denying that. Thanks for sharing this with us. :-)
*The "molten lava" was actually boiling Adhesive X!
Those boots have to be 'Wonder Footwear' to stand up to that heat. Katana has been around for so long and gone thru so much, but did she ever accomplish anything major on a personal level? Nice job, Ross.
Great job once again. Thanks for taking the time to de-clutter it; yours looks seamless.
I remember this comic very well. I liked the look of Phoenix so much that he instantly became a favorite hero of mine. Just my luck they used him to be who he was revealed to be. But that didn't stop me from keeping him a hero in my drawings or Mego homemade adventures (though looking back boy was my version of his costume no homerun). Awesome memories; thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Agreed. Katana is just the right DC character to replace Falcon in this scenario.

PS: I'm kind of hoping to see Sam Wilson's Captain America on this year's July 4th cover, perhaps paired with Uncle Sam, Yankee Poodle, or Con-El.
ReplyDeleteAnother idea: A photo cover with Batman (I'd go with Affleck, but Keaton would be fine) paired with Spider-Ham.
ReplyDeleteOr, failing that, Super Squirrel (from "Justa Lotta Animals") vs. the 'Mazing Man-Spider (nee Webster Weaver).

Hmm... Looks like Cap is getting a taste of what Bucky had to go through. ;)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you've cooked up for STF #4075 (circa June 9)!
