For this Anniversary Issue, I thought I would go for a full length free for all featuring two of my favorite teams. I'm surely not alone in my love for the JLA. The Champions, in this their first incarnation, never quite hit it big, but I always got a kick out of the oddball line up that they had. A super-spy, a Demigod, a possessed stuntman and a trio of mutants filled out their ranks, and I enjoyed seeing these disparate heroes find a way to work together.
Amazing cover, Ross. Your anniversary issues just keep getting better and better.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Christopher!
ReplyDeleteAlways love the Anniversary issues :D
ReplyDeleteBut here's the big question... Superman and Hercules have met several times here on the blog... but when is the movie adaptation from the 50's starring George Reeves as Supes and Steve Reeves as Herc? XD You play the name game a lot so that would be a twist!
Big Mike is right. That, too, would make a great movie theater lobby card simulation!
ReplyDeleteAs for today's cover? I remember when "The Champions" first were first published. Marvel Comics, like DC, were still only TWENTY CENTS (plus sales tax)! And the constant recurrence of the Serpent Crown made it, for me, Marvel's greatest McGuffin.
Thanks for the nostalgia, Ross. And congrats on 3800 issues! :-)
Superman has crossed paths multiple time with Hercules, but mostly the DC version.
ReplyDeleteJust pointing out that Darkstar wasn't revealed to be a mutant until AFTER the Champions disbanded.
ReplyDeleteGhost Rider VS The Atom is the strangest match-up of all.
ReplyDeleteNot that strange. They first met up in STF #3460.
ReplyDeleteNow, Mickey Mouse and the TMNT teaming with a certain mixed-blood Contraxian in "Jack of Kingdom Hearts"? THAT would be strange!
3800 issues...not bad for a guy who claimed that his taste weren't always mainstream.
ReplyDelete"Contest of Champions".... ok. The Champions faded faster than the X-Men but lasted longer than Capt Savage and His Leatherneck Raiders. Wait till we hit an Earth in the multiverse where they are still active.
For those who haven't heard, looks like the CW is going for much cheaper shows to air in the future with new people in charge. Careful what you wish for.
I never wished for reboots of SUPERNATURAL or CHARMED. But, that's what CW is subjecting us too, anyway! :-(
ReplyDeleteBtw: I wonder what Vixen thought about the Big Brawl between Superman and her new hubby?
ReplyDeleteWith the new multi-verse, how will she feel when she meets new Hercs that are single and react to her?
ReplyDelete@Tobor: didn't that already happen @ STF #3492?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: By George, I think you've got it!
ReplyDeleteThe Champion's "oddball line-up"... otherwise known as "Somebody at Marvel asked 'Who aren't we using in any other comic at the moment?'..."
ReplyDelete:D
Black Widow against Black Canary seems a natural clash... It's just a pity that Natasha wasn't still in her original costume, bearing in mind that that -- IIRC -- also featured fishnets.
@Simreeve: blame it on a jealous Zatanna.

@Anon: Mmmmmmmm! I just had a vision of a Siamese human-knot with BW, Zatanna, and Spidey.
