Ant-Man & The Wasp Vs. The Legion of Doom

I had seen superhero cartoons before, but nothing prepared me for Challenge of the Super-Friends.  Here not only did the Super-Friends expand their roster, but they also battled The Legion of Doom, an army of DC supervillains, in every hour long episode!  It may seem quaint now, but for 9 year old me it was like a summer blockbuster every Saturday.

  1. Yet another great cover. Elegant. What was the source for the Legion of Doom shot?

  2. Splash page to Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace #4

  3. I know how you feel, Ross. Saturday mornings were a great time for me, as well. We tail-end Baby Boomers could relax from the grind of school work and just watch cartoons all morning and (if really lucky) into the early afternoon!

I also agree with Big Jeff about the cover shot. Never have super-villains looked so suitably sinister! I'm doubly grateful for the search links at the bottom of the article. I almost remarked how the dramatically dim lighting makes Solomon Grundy resemble the Swamp Thing! But, it was really Killer Croc.

Who's the one seated to Scarecrow's left, however? A genetically modified Cat-Man? Or "Maximus Rex" Rogan from JLA v1/#221-231?

  4. Sorry! That should have read "...JLA v1/#221-223".

  5. I was in college when it debuted, and wouldn't have taken notice of it, except... villains! A Saturday morning cartoon that had actual super-villains! That was so revolutionary at the time that I had to watch it. (Plus... Green Lantern and Sinestro every week! But that's another matter.)

  6. @Ross: Ah, yes! The Silver Age Hawkman foe. He and Barbara Ann Minerva would make a great couple. Suitably creepy! But, a great couple, nonetheless.

Thanks, Ross, for all your help. :-)

  7. Years before they came, I was Hungry for the real super heroes, like the galactic guardians because of their personalities AND the art. Hawkman and Hawkgirl with beautifully rendered masks? Batman with some shadows? YES!! Superman done real? These are who I was waiting for.
Wouldn't Hank and Janet been noticed by the 2 enhanced noses?
What's really so great about this cover No Luther. Finally. Nicely done Ross!

  8. @Det. Tobor: Luthor was probably too busy fighting with Norman Osborn @ STF #2537.
