I've always liked the few heroes that came in well under 6 feet - like the original Atom , Puck, and of course (easily the most famous one) Wolverine. In the movies, he's been played by Hugh Jackman for the past 20 years, frustratingly making him one of the taller onscreen heroes. Let's hope the new Marvel version, whenever he should appear, is a bit shorter! It will be one clear way to make this new version separate from what has gone before.
In all fairness, from the moment I first read the X-men Annual that introduced the all-new version thereof (Wolverine, especially), I didn't think of him as 5'/11'' at most. In fact, with the faux-ears of his costume, he always looked an average 6'/3'' at least!* So, I never had any trouble with his cinematic portrayal by Hugh Jackman.
ReplyDelete*And, let's face it. Next to Puck, he looks like an NBA player.
Another vertically challenged hero was Polar Boy.
ReplyDeleteAfter Spider-Man No way Home, both versions can be done without a problem.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the only actor whose name I've seen put forward for Wolverine who's shorter than 5'10" is Daniel Radcliffe, who is an unlikely choice -- even though he's exactly Wolvie's stated height in the comics (5'5"), would probably do quite a fine job (at least, I think he would), and he's young enough to last a good 20-30 years at it himself -- hopefully to include the infamous "body-swap" story with Spider-Man.
ReplyDeleteHeh! Barda-Barda-Barda! Asking Wolverine not to hold back in a life-or-death struggle is like importing steel to Pittsburgh. Totally unnecessary!

Mentioning steel and Pittsburgh together reminds me of the Zoo crew member 'Pig Iron'... and gives me the idea for another themed team: We've had cats, dogs, and rodents, at least, but how about a 'Porcine Powerhouses' line-up?
It could include Pig Iron, SpiderHam, perhaps Wonder Warthog, and... who else? Surely there must be other candidates around? Maybe also Razorback, even though he's only a human in a porcine-themed outfit?
Simreeve, how about Dr. Julius Strangepork?
ReplyDeleteOr a Bizarro-version of Bebop?
ReplyDeleteI'd rather see Spider-ham take on the Superior Man-Spider (Webster Weaver occupied by the mind of Dr. Otto Pussycat O'Ninetails).
ReplyDeleteI think the pig-themed heroes are pretty much rounded out with Spider-Ham, Pig-Iron, and Wonder Wart-Hog -- unless one also includes Link Hogthrob (Pigs In Space) and/or Piggy C. Joey Paide (Duck Dodgers's faithful sidekick).
ReplyDelete@Cary & Bob: split the difference. Make the fourth member Miss Piggy! If nothing else, her super-karate skills would make her a formidable crime fighter.
