I thought I would present a take on the crossover that started it all. I remember seeing ads for Superman Vs. Spider-Man and being fascinated by them. It was a mythical comic to me as it took about a decade before I would be able to own a copy.
Ultraman here is by Ethan Van Sciver. I was glad to get a sketch by him several years ago:
I know everybody keeps saying this, Ross. But, it's true, nonetheless. The characters you bring together, here, you brilliantly do so because--more often than not--none of us even thought to suggest them!
ReplyDeleteUltra-Man vs. Venom is the latest proof of that.
Refresh my middle-aged memory on one point, though. Is it Ultra-Man that has the pyrokinetic breath...or Bizarro?
Bizarro
DeleteFantastic idea and execution, Ross
ReplyDeleteDoes Marvel have any characters that use letters for their emblems the way DC does -Superman, Ultraman, Aquaman ? Thor?
ReplyDeleteYour covers can be like a magic act - misdirection with illusion. Beautifully done.
You mean, aside from Capt. America?
ReplyDeleteOr Simon "wonder Man" Williams, when he was just starting out?
ReplyDelete@Cary: Bizarro has the flame breath. Ultraman (no hyphen) has ultra-heat vision. One of many powers he developed from exposure to green kryptonite! At least, on pre-Crisis Earth Three.
ReplyDeleteThanks! :-)
ReplyDeleteDetective Tobor -- Daredevil immediately comes to mind
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic cover, Ross. It looks like it should be on a newsstand, or a comic shop shelf. And you can know that these two would never get along; they'd keep fighting until one or the other was out of commission. (I'd be rooting for Venom, personally; he's more of an antihero than a villain, and kind of the underdog in this fight.)
ReplyDeleteAnd speaking (albeit indirectly) of Underdog, it's been a while since he's been on here. Maybe he could be paired with Darkwing Duck for a "World's Finest" style story -- or with Spider-Ham for yet another twist on this classic.
And I still think it'd be a fun twist to do a cover with Man-Bat and Man-Spider.
With Flash is it that Van Sciver drew for you? Wally?
ReplyDeleteI bought it off another owner but I assume it's Barry as it was around the time of Flash: Rebirth
ReplyDeleteTobor's question's been bugging me since yesterday, so I decided to look it up. TV Tropes lists Captain America, Demolition Man, Flatman, Hawkeye, Mr. Immortal, Nomad, Puck, Sentry, and Wonder Man, with "honorable mentions" (they're on the list, but for various reasons I don't think they really count) to Galactus, Thor, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.
ReplyDeleteHow about Japan’s Ultraman vs The Crime Syndicate Ultraman?
ReplyDeleteOr Japan's Ultraman vs. GI Joe Adventure Team's Bulletman.
ReplyDelete@Bobbo: I just suggested that very pairing a few days ago. Great minds think alike, and I guess ours do too.
