Doom Patrol and The Defenders

Back in another life, I used to do a lot of acting. About the only person I knew that made it big had been Connie Britton, who I went to acting school with back in the early 90's. One of the last shows I did was an off-Broadway production of a play called Open House.  We ran for over a month, and I had a good time acting with and hanging out afterwards with my character's romantic interest, played by my friend Stephanie.  The show ended and I only saw Steph once more when she came to see me in a night of one acts a little later.  I stopped performing and she moved out of the city so we lost track.  Fast forward about 16 years later and I'm watching Doom Patrol.  There was something familiar about Hammerhead, the manifestation of one of Crazy Jane's personalities - and the credits confirmed it.  She shaves her head for the role, but that is indeed my old pal Stephanie.  We later caught up on Facebook, it's nice to see her with a cool comic book related recurring role.  Looks like she got a part on the new MacGuyver series as well.

  3. CONGRATULATIONS ROSS, it can be rare to know someone who has gotten to that level accomplishment.

  4. Cool story. I have a similar one from my (brief) days as a stagehand. Seeing Niles Caulder on the cover made me wonder if you'd ever paired him with Professor X?

  5. Neat! Now I'll be on the lookout for Stephanie Czajkowski in other things.

  6. Congratulations to your friend Stephanie! I think most of us who have done any substantial amount acting will have known someone who goes on to something big. In my case, a kid who was a year behind me in high school went on to do such things as originate the role of the Green Goblin in Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and the title character in How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical (Patrick Page).

With today's cover, I wondered about the pairing of these two teams until I saw who they were dealing with. Immortus and General Immortus go together quite well, for reasons beyond the name similarity, though their motivations would be different enough that they'd be at odds before long. In fact, a cover with them doing exactly that would, I think, be pretty cool.

And speaking of Immortus, we really haven't seen much, if anything, of Nathaniel Richards' selves here other than Kang the Conqueror. I don't even see the name of Immortus in the tags column; he'd be a good partner for the Spectre or the Phantom Stranger in repairing unintentional damage done by some of our time-hopping heroes. Iron Lad could briefly join the Teen Titans. If you can find a decent picture of Kangaroo the Conqueror, he'd be a good foe for the Zoo Crew. And how about "Indiana Jones and the Tomb of Rama-Tut"? I'm sure something could be done with the Scarlet Centurion as well, and possibly even Victor Timely or Mister Gryphon.

  7. Thanks for sharing that with us, Ross. It's nice to learn about one of the sources for your imaginative cover-sims. Improvisational acting!
Not something to be underestimated (as any Colin Mochrie fan could tell you).

Re: today's cover? I thank you for that, even more! Not only because of the great punny title. But, also, because you've fulfilled a fantasy I've long held; a team-up against the Immorti!!

Why DC and Marvel never thought of using those namesake villains, together, at the height of their canonical crossovers is beyond me.

  8. @Bob: Um, I think you mean Ferro Lad? If so I like the idea.

    1. No he meant "Iron Lad". That's the name of one of the Young Avengers.

  9. @Bigby65: you mean, the teenage Tony Stark from the circa early 1990's story arc, "The Crossing?"

  10. My brush with greatness was working on the college newspaper with Ryan Murphy. I like yours better.

  11. @Daviticus & Anon@5:48: Iron Lad is a member of the Young Avengers, a version of Nathaniel Richards before becoming Rama-Tut and then Kang the Conqueror.

Ferro Lad is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and as such is a DC character, not Marvel.

@Ross: Given this confusion, there could be an opportunity to bring these two together for an adventure, possibly to foil another scheme of the Time Trapper.

  13. Hammerhead is good on Doom Patrol!

What I'd look forward to most in a Defenders/DP team-up is Hulk's nicknames for the DP members. Bandage Face, Glowing Man, Growing Girl, Dumb Robot, and Beard Man, and Dumb Hat if Mento is there.

  14. P.S @Daviticus and Bigby: like, say, the Time Trapper trying to eliminate a chrono-spatial rival by preventing Donald "Blue Manhunter" Richards from becoming Nathaniel's father?
