This may look like a relatively simple cover, but it was quite tricky to create. In order to get the Super-Skrull to be trapped within Darkseid's beams, I had to remove Orion, who was originally there, then recreate the missing beam parts, then isolate that into a couple of layers and place them on top of one another, before inserting the Skrull and then adding in the background elements. Here are some stages of development:
I'll try to include some more of these "behind the scenes" looks on some future covers as well.
The Master at work... I enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes stuff. More please.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see Darkseid - top villain!
Great job perfectly executed. Happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteI am duly impressed and proportionately grateful. You usually only honor your readership with these b.t.s. glimpses every thousandth cover-sim!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the Behind The Scenes look. Lots of Photoshop schooling. What about Darkseid vs Amazo and Super-Adaptoid? Could they handle him?
ReplyDeleteMaybe in conjunction with the Mimic and Composite Superman.
ReplyDeleteFor this one, I needed no convincing. I took one glance at that beam cage and thought, "Holy cats! I don't envy Ross the work on that one!" This would have to rival one of your "100-Page Special" covers. And it's quite well done, too; I would've wanted something different with Super-Skrull's flame trail, but getting his arm placement right was surely trouble enough.
ReplyDeleteNow go do something simple and undemanding, like a meeting of Woozy Winks and Roger Rabbit.
The comments about basically bringing The Totalitarians together against Darkseid, I got to thinking about the premier shape-changers of the Big Two, Chameleon Boy and Morph. I think a story with those two would be loads of fun.
Great cover. Had the idea last night for Doctor Strange and the Legion of Super-Heroes teaming up against Mordru and Dormammu.
ReplyDeleteHopefully not amalgamated together as "Mordramamu!" Those two are bad enough, individually.
ReplyDeleteP.S.---my compliments on being able to (re)integrate that Omega Beam cage. It's like a cross between a Rubix cube and the Tholian web! So, artistically, you must've had your work cut out for you.
ReplyDeleteA lot of work but it all paid off with a great cover.
ReplyDeleteThe Super-Skrull is a tough opponent, but c'mon--alone against Darkseid?
ReplyDeleteBring in the other Totalitarians and Darkseid might be seriously taxed to win.
Anyone else getting a "Tholian Web" vibe from Darkseid's beams?
ReplyDelete"I am Commander Loskene! You are trespassing in a territorial annex of the Tholian Assembly! That is not a BIT nice! You have made me very angry! VERY angry indeed!"
ReplyDeleteHow about Marvin the Martian vs. Khan Noonian Singh?
ReplyDeleteThat's a brilliant suggestion, Kid C! Seconded!
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me, though: Is Khan his family name, or Singh? If the former, might he have an aunt or cousin named Kamala?
@Bob Greenwade: I'm reminded more of Glen Miller.
ReplyDelete"Singh! Singh! Singh! Singh!
Everybody start to swing!"
@Anon@11:08: I'm not sure Glenn Miller (yes, he spelled it with two N's) ever recorded "Sing! Sing! Sing!" The famous version of that song was by Benny Goodman, with the immortal Gene Krupa on drums.
ReplyDeleteGene Krupa was an Immortal?!
ReplyDeleteI hope he never brought his drumsticks to any of those sword fights.
