Superman and Captain America (The Movie!)

I've seen some decent reviews for the new Superman '78 mini-series that continues the movie's continuity.  This is the type of title that I have been hoping that DC would make since reading the quite fun Batman '66.  Batman '89 is out as well, and while the reviews haven't been as good for that one, the art is so nice I might have to check it out anyway.

Superman and Captain America previously dabbled in politics in STF #917, and were part of a love triangle in STF #1207...

  1. i truly love your photo-covers more than your usual great covers, Ross, and this is no exception however the image of Cap is that of Reb Brown not Kurt Russell as you have stated here.....
was this an error or a choice????

  2. I re-cast. Reb Brown wasn't a big enough name for the movies.

  3. These "Close Encounters" have been a true joy to watch. A Superman - Captain America partnership could be interesting. Cap isn't much of a detective, but he has other skills of value, like as a tactician.
Since DC remade Kal-el in Chris' image years ago, the series may not be much of a stretch. In the 1960s, a story established that most of Earth made Superman an honorary citizen in the different countries because of how much he helped everywhere. A true International Rescuer.
Since Cap has a rock solid healthy ego, he wouldn't ever think of himself as being anything else than a true partner to this non-Earther. Seeing them hang out after a case could be more interesting, as Clark would be happy to be in the background until needed.
Hopefully, the new series does better than some of the stories back then. One I hated had Superman growing giant size but his brain was kept normal size to hinder him. NOT DONE WELL.

  4. Ross remember Chris Reeve was not a name when he was cast, and most times I think casting "names" is a mistake regarding superhero movies, everyone has to have the opportunity to start somewhere. And to my memory all your Superman photo covers feature either Reeve or Reeves. How about a multiversal crossover with them, Dean Cain, Tom Welling, and one 9r both of the Salkind Superboy TV show, and Joshua Orphin introducing Krypto. It would be an ambitious undertaking but reminiscent of some of those great pre-Crisis comics covers.

  5. @D. Tobor: I remember that story. Luthor referred to it as "Dinosaur Syndrome." Of course, that was not only pre_Crisis, but pre-Jurassic Park, as well! Which is, to say, before it was scientifically determined that some dinosaurs were a lot smarter than the brain capacity of their fossilized skulls initially indicated.

@Ross: I remember the DC graphic novelization of BATMAN RETURNS. And I thought the artwork pretty realistic! The Penguins still looked like Danny DeVito, the Dark Knight still resembled Michael Keaton, and the ill-fated Ice Princess still did justice to the fetching Christine Conaway (future co-star of "Time Cop: The Series").

  6. @Phylo: We know that today, but in the 70s/80s, not so much. I had the same thought as jack-el, but Ross' explanation is reasonable, and Kurt would've made a decent Cap at the time.

That said, Reb Brown actually did a decent Cap, and I'd still love to see the comic adaptation of the Captain America/Wonder Woman TV-movie starring him and Cathy Lee Crosby.

@Ross: The part I'm wondering about is: Ronny Cox as the Grandmaster??? That's even more unlikely than Jeff Goldblum (who gave a fine performance in the context, but wasn't convincing as En Dwi Gast). For the period, I think I'd prefer Leonard Nimoy.

  7. Interesting choice of Kurt Russell with his son Wyatt playing John Walker’s Captain America in Disney+ series. He later gave the name back to Steve Rodgers and became U.S. Agent.

  8. Wait; my mistake. I was confusing Ronny with Wally Cox (as I occasionally do, when the name alone is involved). Ronny would've been fine as the Grandmaster, back in the day. Wally would've been a surprise, unlikely casting.

  9. @Bob G.: Wally Cox was unavailable, as he had just been cast as Merryman in "Inferior Five: the Motion Picture."

  10. Featuring a Don Knotts cameo as President Jimmy Carter?

  11. @Other Bob: Right now, the only way DC could get me back in the theater to watch one of their movies would be to do an Inferior 5 film. (And it would work!)

  12. @Bob: starring Weird Al Yankovic as five clones created by the same process that Michael Keaton underwent in MULTIPLICITY?

In the Endgame movies Captain America goes back in time. So it could be valid to use Christopher with Chris Evans as Cap. Just don't call it C casting.

  14. @Cary: 30 years ago Al would've been credible as Merryman or White Feather. These days I could buy him as the mayor or chief of police... and certainly as Executive Producer!

  15. Has the Reb Brown Cap ever teamed up with Batman '66?

  16. I just find casting Ronny cox as one of the villains interesting since he actually played the President of the United States in the unlamented Matt Salinger Captain America movie. Frankly, he was a more convincing hero than Matt Salinger's Cap. Played with the sort of determination and conviction (And sense of duty) that would make the MCU Cap proud, (Especially taking on one of Red Skull's goons one on one even though he was physically overmatched.

  17. Speaking of Reb Brown: how about Cap'79 and Snake Plissken vs. Judge Dredd?
