There are comic book artists that may have been more influential, like Jack Kirby and Neal Adams, and there's at least one artist that I would call my favorite when I factor in sentimental reasons (Jim Aparo), but if you were to ask my my opinion on who I feel to be the greatest comics illustrator of all time, I don't even have to think about it: Joe Kubert. I'm always in awe at his work, which never waned through his long career. All while he was teaching a new generation of artists at his school!
Lets do the Time Storms again. The Time Storm curse has hit Superman, Batman, Captain America and now Sgt Rock.
ReplyDeleteJoe's Silver age Hawkman and Hawkgirl have my vote of top notch artistic appreciation. They stood way out beyond most of their counterparts.
Second you on Kubert, Ross. He's a huge part of an artistic universe that is shamefully completely off the radar as far as non-comics folk are concerned.
ReplyDeleteI was never much into war comics as a kid, so his Sergeant Rock work passed me by. But when I look at it now it's breathtakingly good.
Next week, Rock vs Aliens. Meanwhile Thor,Tor,and More see gore when War hits the Jersey Shore.

OK! Being serious, now. I have to agree with you about the late, great Mr. Kubert. His artistic depictions of Easy Company, alone, will never be surpassed. And his unfinished masterpiece--that cosmic allegory he was working on--?

ReplyDeleteI had to click his tag to see it, but Sgt. Rock has indeed had some interesting time-jumps. He's been in just about every war, other than the Cimmerian Wars, the Dominion War*, or the ones that happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. He might just need a Doctor to fix things.

ReplyDelete@MHS: that sounds awfully similar to a certain video game I read another comic insert about. Took place in Valhalla; and the main protagonist was a WWII U.S. Army sergeant similar to Frank Rock.
