I have been rereading the entire run of Calvin and Hobbes and I am about half way through. It amazes me how Bill Watterson really hit the ground running with the comic strip. Often you'll see a progression in the first few years of a strip, but he had the character designs, personalities and comedic style pretty much fully formed right from the beginning. On the other end, he never let the quality wane, either. If anything, he stayed at top form right until the final installment. This is my third or fourth time reading these and I am still enjoying them as much as the first time around.
I have to agree with you there, Ross. That Insect Overlord might even have served as the inspiration for all those STAR WARS trivia guide illustrations of the Colicoids (inventors of the dreaded droidekas)!
ReplyDeleteI also compliment you on finding a compatible shot of the X-men. Is that from one of their confrontations with the Gigeresque Brood?
that is the sign of a true classic....
ReplyDeletethe ability to come back and reread and maintain the same high level of enjoyment and entertainment....
like rereading our favorite posts by you Ross....
pure gold....
Watch out, Spiff! It's actually a trap being sprung by Zazzala; Queen Bee of the planet Korll!
ReplyDeleteAn alien insect overlord and his boy. How cute is that. They look so natural together.
ReplyDeleteNice to know you're finding a lot of gold in that "strip mining".
Cary: It's by Skottie Young, I think for a variant cover
ReplyDeleteJack-El: Thank you!
@Anon-716: She probably got the idea from her Hymenopterized Justice Leaguers (who are probably still sore at Stupendous Man from STF #3026).
ReplyDeleteP.S. @ Ross: thanks for the info. :-)
ReplyDeleteJust checked, it's from the cover of Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #59
ReplyDeleteI'm always down for a Calvin & Hobbes in the Marvel Universe cover :D
ReplyDelete@Ross: even better! Thanks, again. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe really need Spaceman Spiff and Duck Dodgers.
ReplyDeleteThat overgrown flea reminds me of "The Progeny" from the Legion Lost series.
ReplyDeletehey Ross, i see that Kang (from the Simpsons) has appeared here but Kodos has not so how about Kodos & Kang Johnson take on Spaceman Spiff...
ReplyDeleteand you wish you could throw in Roger Smith from American Dad and Gordon Shumway from A.L.F......
Weird Trivia...
ReplyDeletedid you know that Kodos and Kang on the Simpsons were named for to characters from Star Trek????
Kodos the Executioner was played by actor Arnold Moss...
and the Klingon Kang was played by Michael Ansara...
it would probably be near impossible to do a cover with Kodos and Kang Johnson the sisters from the Simpsons meeting the Star Trek namesakes....
but how cool would that be????
How about just Kang Simpson vs. Kang the Conqueror?
ReplyDeleteRoss already did that, way back in STF #2047.*
ReplyDelete*Or was that A.D. 2047?
How about a deadpool/detective pikachu crossover, has anyone done that yet?
ReplyDeleteI’ll see that and raise you pikachu and Detective Chimp!
DeleteOr Jigglypuff and the Power Puff Girls? I bet not even Mojo Jojo could stay awake through one of JP's lullabies!
ReplyDeleteNext: Hobbes takes Star-Lord's place as leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. (Which shouldn't be hard, for Hobbes I mean.)
ReplyDeleteDeadpool + Detective Pikachu would only really work with Hal Jordan along.
ReplyDeleteOn another track, maybe Jigglypuff and Morpheus (Neil Gaiman's Sandman)?
Only if they were teaming up against Lord Nightmare while trying to rescue the Strange Brothers.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking it might be nice for Calvin's Spaceman Spiff to meet the X-Men's X-Babies from the Mojoverse.
ReplyDeleteOrdinaryguy2
Why not? He's already met the Tiny Tot Titans.
ReplyDeleteOops! My bad: that was Stupendous Man. See STF #2341.
ReplyDeleteI just discovered your covers. They are amazing. I have a C&H fansite and I'd love to have them on there. Do you prefer I upload the images directly or should I embedthe page?
ReplyDeleteRob: Glad you like the blog. If you want to share the covers, please provide links to braveandboldlost.blogspot.com, so folks know the source and can find the whole collection.
