Hopefully we will hear some casting choices for the HBO Max Justice League Dark series soon. I am most interested in who will play Deadman. It should be someone with both dramatic and comedic chops that does not mind a role that requires heavy makeup. Someone with a distinct voice pattern would help too - for when his possessed subjects speak and the audience can tell it's Boston Brand pulling the strings.
Not exactly. See the series Resident Alien on Syfy?? It's worth doing the Darth Vader bit. One actor does the heavy physical lifting cheaply and a voice talent gets the bigger salary. Yeah Entertainment World.
ReplyDeletePoor Boston Brand! Where are Wolfram and Hart when you need them?
ReplyDeleteP.S. @ Horsefeathers: unless the heavy make-up Ross referred to is the stuff that's applied nowadays for motion-capture work. The resulting CGI would still be based on the same actor supplying Deadman's voice.
ReplyDelete@Cary: that makes much sense, my precious!
ReplyDelete;-)
@Cary:Is that how they do Doom Patrol's cast work?
ReplyDeleteOne of the animated versions of Deadman gave him a distinctive accent (I think a mild Boston accent, actually) that carried over into anyone he possessed. Something similar, plus a distinctive speech pattern in dialogue, should be sufficient for that.
ReplyDeleteAs for makeup, it's not as heavy as one might think: a bald cap (possibly, unless the actor shaves his head) plus a head's worth of white face paint.
@HF: I couldn't tell you, pro or con. I don't stream Doom Patrol (or any other made-for-Internet series).
ReplyDelete@Cash & Cary- Who is the actor who plays the Robotman in Doom Patrol?
ReplyDeleteThe actor who physically portrays Robotman for Doom Patrol is Riley Shanahan. Doom Patrol star Brendan Fraser has praised the actor inside of the Robotman suit.
n case you didn’t know, Brendan Fraser rarely appears in the Robotman suit for Doom Patrol. The character is physically played by Riley Shanahan in the DC television series. Speaking with Zach Braff and Donalf Faison on their podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Fraser touched upon how Shanahan helps accentuate the role of Robotman.

“That’s Riley Shanahan wears the suit. He is a wonderful comedic performer with fantastic timing, and he is full-on playing the character through a mask. He does the heavy lifting there. I show up in an episode or two wearing pieces of that because, like I said, it breaks a lot of rules and makes its own, the way the show unfolds, but otherwise, no. I’ve got to be clear with you – it’s like a dream job. Somebody else wears the thing, shows up for you, and in recent months I don’t even go in the studio. I can do ADR on a cell phone.”
Well, then, I look forward to watching "DOOM PATROL" on regular TV. Hopefully, with zero commercial interruption!
ReplyDelete@Cary: almost hate to say it. But, I think you hope in vain. :-(
ReplyDeleteit also shows that the big name actor of a character doesn't have to always portray that character for the camera regardless of cgi options. Stardom. Darth Vader body and voice.
ReplyDeleteNot every JEJ can have a David Prowse. I think that particular pairing was a fortuitous exception rather than a textbook rule.
ReplyDelete@Cary & anon: The first two seasons of Doom Patrol are on DVD, and my public library has them. Check with yours.
ReplyDelete@HHH & Cary: It may warrant pointing out that, despite having an Academy Award nomination, JEJ wasn't a big star until he did Vader.
ReplyDeleteBut, David Prowse remained vocally unknown to all but British audiences, throughout the rest of his career.
ReplyDeleteSorry, Bob. No such luck! :-(
ReplyDelete@Anon1119 & Bob: sad-but-true, that.
ReplyDelete:-(
The actor you described is Wentworth Miller.
