Space Cabbie and Doctor Who

One of the best parts of Justice League Action was that I could really tell that the creators were true fans of DC comics history.  There were some great references to classic stories.  The fact that they would do deep dives and include characters like Space Cabbie in the mix made the show really rewarding to watch for a ling time comics fan.  I was hoping the series would have more episodes, but I think it has unfortunately run its course.

  1. Oh my goodness! I LOVE Space Cabbie!

  2. "Justice League Action?" Can't say I've ever heard of that series.
Was it made for pay-cable TV?

  3. I was so happy to see so much DC Earth 1 history caught so accurately. And seeing the credits on who was playing some of these characters meant something too. I just wished the art was more like the nineties instead of being so simplified.

  4. Thanks! This served as my introduction to Space Cabbie. He sounds like a fun concept.

  5. And did you forget the U.S.S.ENTERPRISE has travelled the timestreams. My favorite is Tomorrow is Yesterday with the air force base involved. Pure fun.
Another time grouped cover with Rip Hunter and Time Tunnel and The Enterprise and the Legion might be worth considering also Ross. Plenty of new possibilities on who to use.

  6. and don't forget Mr Peabody and Sherman with the Way Back Machine :0

  7. Well, who knows? Maybe Space Cabbie will show up on Doom Patrol or Legends of Tomorrow some time. I'm not super familiar with him (I'm only one step of familiarity ahead of Toby), but he seems like he'd fit right in with either of those... just has he seems a great fit for the Fourth Doctor here.

Yeah... nice pairing, Ross. Good work.

  8. DC sometimes seems confused about which time-period he "belongs" in, anyway: His origin & early appearances set him clearly in the future, as did some later ones, but the last time that I saw him he was interacting with the [post-'Rebirth' version of] the 'Super-Sons' in the present day.

  9. Ross, Did Space Cabbie have a logo in his Mystery In Space days, or is it one you made up or from a Who's Who page ? I've never seen a reference to him with the dash in his name before.

    1. That's from Who's Who, but Who's not from Who's Who. Who's on second. I think so, any who.

  11. I well remember Space Cabbie (but not the hyphen) from UK editions
(black & white) of Mystery in Space. That's showing my age! But I'd never realised he'd reappeared. He makes a fun fit with the Doctor.

  12. ... It's the Gil Kane Cabbie in my memory though.

  13. @det_Tobor: I think DC and IDW already did that. With their LSH/STAR TREK:TOS crossover, about five years back.

  15. @Anon 7:25, No one may know all the tv show team ups, parodies, single gag shots involving S. T. in other shows, but the comics are a bit more limited. Legion of Super-Heroes, X-Men, Transformers, Dr. Who, Green Lantern and Planet of the Apes (multi universe)... at least. Seeing the silver age Superman there could have been interesting.

  16. I think Anonymous 725 was referring to the splash page (either LSH/ST issue #4 or #5) that showed the TARDIS, the Time Tunnel, and other pop-culturally recognizable modes of time travel "captured" by Flint Savage.

  17. Come on, guys... how could you discuss time travel without mentioning the world's most famous DeLorean? Forgetting a certain Quantum Leaper might be understandable, but that...?!?

And for those of you who have Netflix and either speak Spanish or don't mind reading English subtitles, I might recommend the Spanish program El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Ministry of Time). It is, in my humble opinion, a load of fun (and I'm rather picky about these things).

  18. @BG: I think Sam Beckett was helping a certain "Journeyman" achieve full-fledged professional status as a time traveler.

Travelers, please direct your attention to STF #382, April 30, 2013.
If the Time Masters are to be taught how easy time can be altered, these are some great teachers. ( Funny how much damage Reverse Flash can do and keep getting away with it. Even the Dominators didn't seem to be aware of his changes. )

  20. Kang is more like an autocratic headmaster and Booster Gold, a chronically anti-authoritarian pupil.

  21. @Anon 8:33, a chronically anti-authoritarian pupil is how I feel with some tv writers.
CW had Invasion with the Dominators, because of Flashpoint. Legends of Tomorrow are with Time Masters. NONE of these "TIME SPECIALISTS" detected Eobard going into the past and CHANGING it by:
    * Killing Dr Wells and his wife
    * starting the particle Accelerator early and in an imperfect state
    * Releasing Dark Matter and creating all those meta-humans
Really? No one? Just how good are the time "authorities"??

  22. And while it may be a minor concern to some, think of it this way....
Your favorite video game has just had an "upgrade". It now has in its programming, a Randomizer that changes the rules of the game in any of 10,000 ways for "better video game story telling" while you're in the middle of the game.
    How enjoyable would that be?

    ReplyDelete
  23. @det_Tobor: I'd introduce that Randomizer to Wreck-it Ralph.

    ;-)

As for the revisionaries who write for the "Arrow-verse" shows? I stopped watching those CW sci-fi soap operas after Barry Allen got framed into prison by the Thinker.
