Code: Red in: "Mars Needs Gingers!"

The De-Gingering of DC continues.  Lightning Lad is the latest character to lose his red hair.  What do they have against us gingers?  They are always killing them off or changing their appearance to non-gingers.  When a ginger character makes the leap to movies or TV, the red hair seems like the first thing to go.  It's enough to make a guy feel unwanted.

Code: Red first appeared in STF #1293...

First, you have to understand that I'm a sucker for a sexy red-head. So much so that I married a red-head. Knowing that, I've been thinking more about your super-fun CODE: RED concept. It seemed to get a lot of buzz on social media. Might be worth a follow-up. So I've compiled all the characters mentioned above and across various social media platforms. Lots of possibilities here if you want to follow up:

  2. I've yet to see a single episode of Riverdale, so I have no opinion on that.

Look up Riverdale Season 1 Archie photos on Bing or wherever you prefer. It's ok to "dye" for your job, but not everyone looks like Ron Howard in doing it. And you have to keep it all season long.
One can only guess that since Barry Allen is a blond in comics only, this is an expense that producers don't want to make or can't quite get right. After all, it's so much easier turning somebody green.

    https://bestlifeonline.com/red-hair-facts/

There’s a reason red hair tends to be eye-catching: it’s the single rarest human hair color in the world. Whether you’re sporting a strawberry-tinged mane or have burgundy locks, if you’ve got ginger genes, you’re practically a unicorn. So, how many people have red hair, anyway?

If you’re a natural redhead, that means you’re in good, if limited company. It’s true that red hair exists across numerous ethnic groups and on every continent. However, just 1-2 percent of the total global population has natural red hair, with the bulk of the world’s redheads sharing a specific genetic quirk. (That means, at most, there are 152,656,386 redheads walking the planet.) Most redheads have a recessive mutation of the MC1R gene, which informs your body’s production of pigment, producing ginger locks. In fact, virtually every redhead needs two copies of this gene—one from each parent—for red hair to result.

So, where on earth can a redhead feel like they’re surrounded by their own kind? Try Ireland. Making up 10 percent of the population, Ireland has more redheads than anywhere else on the globe. Scotland is a close second, with a 6 percent redheaded population.

  5. The population of Gilligan's Island only had one redhead...with the sexiest super-power of all. The ability to make men faint with one blown kiss (lol)!

Forget the others. Get out the Cloning Chamber and duplicate Ginger(s), Mars needs them. Maryann won't mind.

  7. Room Service sort of hit on why comic-book gingers tend to have non-gingers playing them: the actors are hard to come by, so even if the character's hair color is kept there's usually a need for a wig or a dye job. Often, especially when the hair color isn't an iconic part of the character's look (and sometimes even when it is), the matter is hand-waved; I'm not sure that any of the actors who have played Jimmy Olson have been ginger.

On another topic, I'm still hoping we can get a Code: Blue team with Nebula, Nocturne, Shadow Lass, et al.

  8. You have to think there's an element of xenophobia involved. Also gingers aren't considered a "protected class", which to some people makes it "okay".

  9. That's probably similar to the reason why nobody's ever done a reboot of the Vampirella movie (originally starring Talisa Soto). Most would-be producers and writers doubtless want to keep the camel-toe costume. But, most would-be directors are probably waving their hands in dismissive favor of a more full-length sleeveless leotard.

  10. That point list missed the most famous red head in comics, Little Orphan Annie.

  11. I mean, after all; she was the inspiration for the initial optical condition of Starfire's whole race!

  12. If the X'halians ever had a civil war, they'd probably open fire simultaneously after being told: "Don't shoot till you see the whites of their eyes."
