The Legion of Super-Heroes seems to be making a return in the comics, this time under the pen of Brian Michael Bendis. I haven't checked it out, but it seems like Jon Kent will be the Superboy of this incarnation. I'll order it digitally in trade if reviews are good. My one concern is that while I like Bendis and he often comes up with cool concepts, I find that he tends to make most of his characters speak in the same "voice" - that could be a problem in with a team that has as large a cast as the LSH does.
That and they just killed off Saturn Girl after stringing us along for months about her appearance in the Doomsday Clock. NOT APPRECIATED AT ALL.
ReplyDeleteThere is A "Saturn Girl" in this new iteration but nothing like the real one. "Lightning Lad" is black, "Cosmic Boy" is Asian, and "Blok" looks like a child's version of what a mud man would look like.
DeleteI will guess that Colossal Boy is helping the GOTG rescue Saturn Girl from Badoon-occupied Titan. But, there's only one problem; standing in their way is a 31st-century incarnation...of Ultron!
ReplyDelete@ Bigby65 That's for the same reason Jimmy Olson was made black on the Supergirl tv series and Supergirl was given a sister that was gay.... inclusion and getting a better market share of the audience.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing, as I was growing up, I used to hear from a lot of black guys that comic books are for kids. Childish fantasy junk. Ok, a lot of white guys said the same thing. BUT, guess what? When the Black Panther movie came out, all those people who INSISTED that superheroes were just for little kids went to see the movie! And in a lot of cases, more than once. So much " just for little kids".
That's the same market that the entertainment people have learned they have to get in order to make real profits for their future. Representation for market share is a needed thing.
But we know about parallel Earths and alternate timelines, so destroying the original Legion is not needed or wanted.
Brian's the guy who figured out that Bruce Banner has Dissociative Identity Disorder, and that's not the only time he gave us something that impactful, so we can expect some similar exploration of psyche in his LSH run. But, like you, Ross, I'd be inclined to wait for TPB and see what develops.
ReplyDelete"...exploration of psyche?"
ReplyDeleteLOL! Wasn't that the code-name for one of the Wanderers? The sexy empath who could manipulate emotions?
P.S.---how about Krypto and Bathound teaming up with Lockjaw to rescue 103 Dalmatians in... "CRUELLA AND INHUMAN!"
ReplyDeletetalk about putting on the dog! woof!
ReplyDeleteMy biggest problem with Bendis overall (I can certainly nitpick a lot of dumb ideas he's had alongside the good ones) is that he doesn't care about continuity at all. It's just a concept for him to tell a story without any concern for getting the characters right.

The timeline has changed a few times. There has been a few different Legions that bombed, stopped existing and forgotten. If DC don't get their better market share then this one may end earlier than wanted to.
Just cause DC changes the characters backgrounds doesn't mean they get all those new readers just like that. You see anything saying the characters have been remade to get a better audience? I didn't.l
DC ain't there yet. This Legion might not be around that long.
And talking bout Supergirl, she still didn't get the ratings. It moved from CBS to CW. Those changes for inclusion and getting a better market share of the audience didn't mean a thing. How's the Legion book gonna do better?
ReplyDeleteAll I know, for sure, is if the CW Crisis doesn't result in all four super-series getting better, then we all might as well root for the Anti-Monitor to win.
ReplyDeleteDead serious, btw.
Diversifying the cast is fine, but can't they add new characters?
ReplyDeleteThe comment about DC's killing off Imra makes me glad I don't buy comics any more.
I'm starting to wonder if comics may have been better off, and just plain better, when they were "kid stuff".
My only real beef is that it's yet another ginger that gets erased. We need more Ginger heroes!
ReplyDelete@Ross: How about Tina Louise as the daughter of Ted Grant and Diana Prince'77?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: Ugh! You should be marooned on an uncharted island for that one.
ReplyDeleteThen, again, having Greer Grant as the daughter of Ted Grant by Marga the Panther Woman (a now-public domain Golden Ager of the Sheena School) wouldn't be illogical.
