I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Ditko, a giant in the history of comic book artwork. His mastery of body language and inventive layouts plus the ability to depict a diverse supporting cast played a huge part in making Spider-Man a massive hit. If all he ever gave us was his work on Spidey he would have been a legend, but he gave us so much more, from Doctor Strange to The Creeper and Hawk and Dove, to Mr. A and The Question and beyond. I know he was very reclusive, but I hope he knew how important he was to the industry and how many fans he made happy over the years.
Thanks Ross!
ReplyDelete...well done!!!
He was much a living legend as Jack Kirby during his time here.
ReplyDeleteRIP, Mr. D. :-(
That should've read "...as much a living legend as..."
ReplyDeleteSorry, Ross.
I, too, was very saddened to hear of Mr. Ditko's passing, but 90 is a good run. I know you've done a Spidey/Creeper cover or two but have you done Dr. Strange/Creeper? That would seem a natural.
ReplyDeleteI used to jokingly refer to him as 'The guy who co-created Squirrel Girl and a bunch of other characters who weren't Squirrel Girl'.
ReplyDeleteRIP Mr. Ditko :(
For some reason I thought Mr. Ditko had already passed. I do hope he took the time to see the Doctor Strange movie; the visuals did a nice job of replicating some of his more "out there" artwork.
ReplyDeleteMy idea of a great all-Ditko cover would have been Doctor Strange and the (original) Question. But I do recognize that you probably put this together at the last minute, Ross, and for that I applaud your work.
(And of course I'm still keen for Dr. Strange vs. Mr. Mxyzptlk -- though I'm happy to wait on that until the second Dr. Strange movie.)
@BG: didn't Ross already do that? With Batman as Doc's ally against Bat-mite and Impossible Man?
ReplyDelete@Bob & Anon: Yes, he did. In TB&TB (UA) #254. The birth of the STFU(niverse)!
ReplyDeleteA great eulogy.
ReplyDeleteEmsley - Dr./Strange and The Creeper was featured as a back up tale in a Question/Spidey cover.
ReplyDeleteAnon & Cary - That's not quite the same. Nice try, though (seriously).
ReplyDeleteI just read about the villain in Blue Beetle #5 on Ditko's run, a Randian character who wants to destroy heroic art and calls himself "Our Man." Maybe he could square off against Rex Tyler?
ReplyDeleteOr failing that, have Kit (the Robin to Harvey Comics' Black Cat) turn out to be the orphaned nephew of Fawcett Comics' Minute Man.
ReplyDeleteBecause both of them are surnamed "Weston," you see!
ReplyDeleteFailing that, however, I'd settle for the Black Cat (Linda Turner) meeting the Bronze Tiger (Ben Turner).
