Sub-Mariner Vs. Blue Beetle

Ted Kord may be a mechanical genius and superhero, but part of his appeal is that he always remains relatable.  He kept his down to Earth personality throughout his adventures, has a great buddy relationship with Booster Gold and mentor relationship with Jaime Reyes.  He's even one of the few superheroes that has had to deal with weight problems - letting himself go for a while and having to work hard to get back into shape.  Is it any wonder that he is such a popular character with comic fans?

  1. I liked the superhuman one, from Charlton, better.

  2. Since I haven't been able to read comics for quite a while, this is the first I'd heard of Ted having weight problems. This has changed my mind about something: I had been thinking that, if I could pick any DC character to play in the Arrowverse, I'd pick Sandman (from Earth-3, as an old buddy of Jay Garrick's). Now Wesley Dodds takes second place to Ted Kord, acting as a mentor to Jaime (in sort of the same way that Hank Pym does for Scott Lang in the Ant-Man movies). Of course, it's not as though either of those has a high chance of actually happening, but a guy can dream.

I also liked the Beetle's team-up with Batman on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The teaser scene with Bruce and Ted bantering back and forth is probably the lightest I've ever seen Kevin Conroy's Batman.

As for this cover, it's quite compelling. I can imagine a story where Ted struggles to figure out, and eventually learn, what Namor's so upset about and takes steps to fix it while also fighting to stop Namor from doing too much property (and personal) damage. Then, in the end, both work together to fight the real threat -- who may or may not be a supervillain.

  3. ...another unusual, as usual, cover team-up, Ross...
...seeing Blue Beetle got me thinking...what if all the Blue Beetles teamed-up with the animated Beatles from Yellow Submarine to battle a battalion of Blue Meanies???

  4. Dear Bob: I will wildly guess that either Attuma or Prince Byrrah has teamed up with Mr. Crabb (a foe of the super-powered Blue Beetle later killed by Jarvis Kord).

  5. I agree with Bob that Ted would try to work thru Namor's anger and solve problem with Kord's company or whoever made it appear his company was at fault probably revealing a new bug, sea beatle style.

  6. And, Jackel,

When beetles fight these battles in a bottle with their paddles
and the bottle's on a poodle and the poodle's eating noodles...

  7. @ Fox and Jackel: Nor should we forget that the pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle. ;-)
