Robin and The Beast

I have to admit, when I was a kid it took me a while to realize that the blue hairy guy in The Avengers was the same character as the guy with big hands and feet in The X-Men.  At. that point, I just read comics at random, whatever my older brothers left lying around, with little sense of continuity.  Eventually I stumbled onto an issue of Amazing Adventures and it started to become clear to me.  The fact that Hank McCoy went through this incredible transformation just made me like him all the more.

  1. I had similar experience with comics- sporadic leftovers from the guy who sold my Dad records. He figured if we were entertained, Dad could browse longer, so he gave us old issues without covers (yeah- ones he was supposed to have destroyed.)
Among them was one where the Beast was grey-furred but passed out from fatigue and awoke blue. I think the Griffin was the villain.
But like a drug dealer giving you your first hit for free, Harvey got me into a habit that has me deep into 50-cent bins and comparing the history from my era with the various retcons and reboots well over forty years later.

  2. How about Beast and Beast-boy?

  3. Actually the Beast and Robin are naturals since both are acrobat thinkers with big hearts. Nightwing and the Beast in the big top would be an natural against the Circus of Crime.

  4. Then there's the tale as old as time, Beautie (from Astro City) and the Beast!

Actually, I'd love see more of the Astro City characters here, just for the gorgeous Alex Ross covers.

  5. Yeah, I'm just the opposite - I always like the original Hank McCoy better. And I think original Hand and original Dick Grayson would be a fantastic teamup.

But another crazy team-up would be Wolverine and The Creeper. Or The Creeper and Deadpool - who would be the most annoying?!

Batman and Cable - The Serious Guys.

The Serious Guys: a whole team of folks with no sense of humor...Batman, Cable, The Spectre, The Punisher (oooh, Spectre/Punisher - there's a fight right there!), The Phantom Stranger, The Vision, Magneto...you get the idea.

    1. Does anyone else remember when Batman used to swap wisecracks with Robin, and it was Hawkman who was known for having no sense of humour?

  6. Jay, funny you should say that. I was just thinking earlier this week that Winged Victory could have been on the Angel/Birdman cover. And I'd love to see the Confessor on this blog.

  7. Yes Batman has become a sour puss and after Dark Metal and current Batman/Batwoman/Clayface story I made go back to not reading Batman comics.

  8. Good question, Ross. Why _would_ The Beast want to destroy the giant Two-Face Penny? My two best guesses:

    1) It's made of carbonadium (the same low-grade adamantium used by Omega Red for draining metabolic energy). So, he wants to prevent it from falling into OR's hands.

    2) It's not actually copper, but post-kryptonite iron. And Magneto is in league with Luthor as part of some anti-Superman plot that involves reverting the metal back to kryptonite!
